D8 is not viable. I know it might appear to be such due to the presence of the hard cover with all the buildings scattered about, but you can't exert pressure and map control from there. Just ask yourself... once you get pushed into by the enemy force, where are you going to move to? How many mechs can you get to fire at the same target? You have very narrow lanes (streets here) by which to direct your fire whereas they will be capable of taking one more lane than you can to fire onto the same target, simply by surrounding you on two sides. They will always have effectively double the firepower than you because they can commit twice as many mechs.
A retreat to D8 can be done, but it's mostly a tactic of desperation. You'll pull a win out of that only after the enemy force is already heavily damaged and you believe your marksmen can finish off wounded targets faster and more efficiently than the enemy's can. To start with that tactic is consigning yourself to the grave and I don't even know comp-worthy tactics.
