I would like to suggest some novels you can read.
The Warrior Trilogy, by Michael A. Stackpole, is about the events before and during the Fourth Succession War. The main acts are the wedding of Hanse Davion and Melissa Steiner, the experiences of Justin Xiang on Solaris VII and as spy on Sian, the vendetta between Morgan Kell and Yorinaga Kurita, the machinations of Michael Hasek-Davion and of subversive elements inside the Steiner nobility, ComStar's secret manipulations and of course the most important battles of the war. You can also look here for a list of BattleTech Novels.

I'd recommend many of the novels of you want to get your imagination moving... otherwise... download MW4 from mektek (see a post above) and get playing until Open Beta accepts you... or you get lucky for Closed Beta access... I've read some 75-80 novels of the series, played all but the earliest computer/console games of MW... and played the TT for a couple years off and on (and still got my mini's)

Hi guys, my only experience with Mechs are an old Battletech 3025 booklet, I had and an old MW game (MW1 or 2?!) and the early table top game, but my friends disliked it... So as a battletech newbie, what can you recommend me as an easy entry into the BT universe. Please just name one book, game, whatever. Thy in advance.

Yes, it's long, it's detailed, and will probably take a couple of sittings to get all the way through. All those aside, it's written specifically for people who want to know how BT mechs work but don't know anything about them. If you can get through it, you'll have a good foundation for the other technical stuff.

As far as the lore?

You can get the feeling of the whole grand-over arching storyline at the above link... and you can explore further off of the links.

speaking of the BattleTech novels, does any one know where I can download PDF's of them I would prefer free or very in-expensive if at all possible
thanks

Might sound odd, but check your local library for downloadables, first. Especially in metro areas, libraries are offering a surprising variety. i'm one of the oddballs that likes Stackpole, though.
