What happened to the in-game(in-ui?) chat? Now we can only chat in groups or with friends? The public chat box was a way to FIND groups and friends and talk about builds and help new players right within the Mechlab lobby in real time.

You mean Clan/IS chat? You have to be part of a faction in one way to see it.

They are shutting it down for Solaris so they can make sure they have "all hands on deck" to make sure it launches smoothly....

There used to be an Inner Sphere chat box and my faction. I figured the IS would still be available.

It is, but you are not part of it.

Each single faction has it's own chat which is hardly used, then there's general Clan and IS chat. But they are only available if you are somehow contracted to any faction. Freelancers don't see it.
