If my ecm raven, runnin' with the assaults, slappin' srms and pulse lasers in the face of what they're shooting, and smackin' lights dumb enough to try to touch MY assaults; throws a flamer on them " hi there- feel free to NOT fire 1/2 your weapons at my buddy"...

I'd say , " yes"...
If you keep your team from taking damage, and help them do damage - and yes, i like it when you do damage too - that's all support. If you spot targets, harass, make the enemy team squirrel, "lure" ( tactics 101 comics FTW ) - this is all support as far as I'm concerned... Narc-ing is great ( less useful past tier4/5, but that's another story ) - these all help the team win.
Damage is great - and easy to see... "force multipliers" are less tangible, and so less recognized - but any force multiplier is overlooked only by fools.
One of my most..warming compliments in my mwo time was, when as a relative noob, i was complimented by the "Battlemagic" unit in CW for being such a good Raven... and they would later move me into lances to support their BattleMasters.
ANYTHING that helps your team WIN, means you got more c-billz. Mad money!
however: roles and team-work are where these shinre.. your work will be more effective.. and appreciated, if you drop with a regular group.
In almost any game I've played, most people want to be the special snowflake/ mary sue/ Neo/ star of the show - support players are rare - find those that recognize and appreciate that you do the jobs most don't want.

All the support gear do work, but you just need to mindful that it can't be all you're doing.

That guy who brings ECM and 3xAMS for the large cluster of heavies/assaults of your team is helpful. If that guy also puts his firepower (such at it is) to good use, he can certainly be an asset to his team.

So you can't hide behind a rock, but it's also simplistic to claim all there is to this game is damage.

Bear in mind that while e.g. Kit Fox C spends 7.5 tons on that BAP/ECM/3xAMS gear, it spends about as much on weapons. Use that whole package effectively.

Yes, but only if you're also doing damage.

Here's an example of what I run on my Purifier. It's got ECM + triple AMS for support, but it has a big chunk of medium range damage with the HLLas and good anti-light/janitor potential with the micropulses and MGs.

Bottom line, as others have said: killing **** first, support as a bonus.
