I had a dumb idea that could be fun. Players get a list of 30 non-controversial social groups to pick from. They pick up to 5 groups to identify with. Then people get a list of player roles in matches. They pick 2-3 roles they like to play. Then people are grouped together in PUGs with people with shared social interests. Each PUG gets an informal team name based on the grouping Like Tattoo & Piercing Snipers vs the Motorcycle Brawlers. This puts people in a fun informal team where other people like the same things you like. It also puts you in groups with people who share your play style. So you don't have LRM Lord screaming at Sniper Lord over VOIP.
The matches won't be perfect balance. But they are not very good now. At least you get some people to chat with about Rugby, Motorcycles or other common hobbies. Plus you group with people who play the way you play.

We would need a LOT more players for that to be worthwhile.

Maybe you would have more players if the matches were not so silent and apathetic. I don't know what happened before I started playing but no one talks. No one is happy, sad or even angry. People in matches just sit there. I have never seen a community so dead. I am used to PvP games where people care about the outcome. People on VOIP yelling out ambushes or wanting to team up. I will be honest the behavior of the average player in MWO creeps me out. The only time anyone says anything is when they win a junk match easily . You get 1 or 2 people saying Hey You Guys are Great. But next match is back to awkward silence. Its hard to have fun when no one else seems to have any.

The problem is that many of the people that really are talking, aren't using the in-game voice system, but instead using TeamSpeak or Discord, and excluding from their comms anyone not also on there with them. Why they do this is beyond me.
