You're welcome to roleplay and stay in one faction forever. That's what some people do. The penalties hurt the game though, by preventing unbalanced populations of players from self adjusting.


You can think of it as short-term mercs and long-term mercs :)

Technically it is different than being merc, which has its own faction. It pays better than being merc too, in terms of mechbays and MC. Which is why Mercstar/KCom/BCMC/EVIL etc... are all faction hopping loyalists.
