Technically you can put ECM on any of the Sun Spiders, but it requires sacrificing a torso.

I didn't have any problems with a 2 LB10X and 3 SRM4 build with a stock omni Vanguard. It's fast enough that you can poke and get to cover, only fully engaging when the target is focused elsewhere. I guess if you had to stare with UAC's or clan lasers it would be a problem, but I was able to twist and spread damage pretty well even at brawling range.

It plays like a big medium more than a heavy. Make sure you are using your speed and high mounts to win trades and you won't have an issue.

Admittedly that was the first day of the challenge and only a couple games because it was so easy to get 1000 damage and I haven't been able to play since then. Maybe since everyone has learned where you need to aim to take out side torsos quickly.

My Manul currently has a kill ratio of 4 and an average damage of 892 after 2 wins and 1 loss. Of course those stats won't last as the sample size increases but the Sun Spider is defiantly a decent Mech.

The side torsos are week though. I've actually stripped a lot of armour from the arms as they never seem to get shot off before the torso goes. May as well use the tonnage for something else.

Reinforcement pack pods only, but the -D gets an ECM side torso. So eventually yes, it's available.
