The Mini Gauss Rifle and Assault Laser should be added to the game for more weapon variety and to fulfill some roles that aren't filled by existing weapons.
The weapons in MWO and Battletech in general roughly fall into a type and one of four sizes. For now, I am ignoring some extremely large and small weapons like micro lasers, machine guns, and railguns.

These two new weapons should follow the trend that exists in the game. The Mini Gauss Rifle should deal about half the damage of the Light Gauss Rifle. The Assault Laser should deal about twice the damage of the Large Laser. Their weights, slot sizes, cooldowns, and ammo weights should follow the same trends set for those parameters in MWO.
Assault Pulse Lasers, ER Assault Lasers, and Heavy Assault Lasers could also be added for consistency.
Both the Mini Gauss Rifle and Assault Laser were featured in MekTek's MekPak. As far as I know, they are not officially canon to the main Battletech universe. I argue that they fit in nicely.

I could see a rebalanced Binary Laser Cannon being added to IS to sort of stand against the Clan Heavy Large Laser, as they're not exactly new tech time wise. But the timeline hasn't been advanced enough to put the Magshot into the game yet as it didn't become available until 3072, so there's no chance of that happening for the next few years.

I like to think I'm fairly well educated in BT but what the heck are those two weapons?

They don't exist in canon. It's coming from someone that apparently doesn't realize this is a 30+ year old IP being turned into a game, not just a game with no lore to speak of. (considering how little lore is actually in this game, I can't blame 'em)

Instead of some weaponry known from MekTek MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries, I would suggest to pick up Blazer (Binary Laser Cannon mentioned by SPNKRGrenth), although I also want to see Bombast laser. And yes, gonna wait for Magshot (closest equivalent of the Mini Gauss Rifle), but dealing just 2 DMG per shot? Good that it's weight it's just 0,5t
