Hey guys,

I am in the market for a new gaming notebook and was wondering if anyone has any experience playing MWO on a mobile version of the GTX1050TI.

What settings do you comfortably run it on? Can it go mostly high on everything?

As I know, MWO is also CPU intensive. Any glaring differences if I go for an 8th gen i5 or i7 machine?

Thanks mechwarriors!

It will run good on that medium/high settings I think.

Notebooks though... I would worry about heat so keep it cool and things like that.

How many gigs the gpu have? MechWarrior Online will run good on 2 gigs video card on medium settings.

To be honest, I doubt that MWO can actually make use of the high-end equipment you're interested of buying..

This is a very old game, and it's not optimized for all the new toys.. You will probably be able to run it all maxed out, but will still get random bugs, disconnects, and issues..

I've heard people's FPS drop for the stupidest reasons, so you may have a beast of a machine, and only run the game at 40-ish FPS..

Runs poor on a 1060 6gb Desktop.. So no idea how a notebook 1050 may run.

That GPU will be more than enough so no worries there, your most likely bottleneck on a laptop is the CPU being heat throttled.

Both of those CPUs will run the game well at high settings IF they can clock at full capacity for extended periods of time, so your primary concern should the cooling of your CPU.

This means the build approach of the laptop is important. Is it a real gaming laptop built primarily for gaming and staying cool, in which case you should be able to max out MWO comfortably, or is it one of those fancy slim ultraportable things where the high specs are there mostly to impress but can't actually make full use of it's own hardware for extended gaming sessions?

If it actually runs poor on a 1060 desktop for you then something is wrong on your end.

Yep, 1060 is way more powerful than previous cards I've used to run MWO on. So if a 1060 is struggling then there is something seriously wrong with that system.

My living room PC;
i3-4160
8GB RAM
1050ti

With VSync off it runs Very High Graphics setting at 110FPS at 1080p in Testing Grounds on Alpine.

I know that Testing Grounds isn't the same as in-game, but I dont have a mouse on that computer to check that for you unfortunately

The key point in that laptop will be the 8th gen i5 or i7
As coffee lake not just adds more cores, but more importantly [bold]on mobile[/bold] more freqency and higher boost, way more than say 6th gen had (Kaby was already better at it)
Which will be a boon for MWO

Btw
If your not exactly sure, pick a laptop with an i7 8th gen and an SSD in it, usually the rest of the components is great

Basically, pick one from the list with the highest boost that you can afford

Also
Always look at the end of the CPU name
HK is best (usually higher boost, OC'able), then H, U is low power, Y is ultra low power

Those 10 series cards are really good

Get about 80ish to 100ish fps out of it (2560x1080), though with custom ini and an i5 at 5.2 Ghz

Thanks for the replies guys. It seems like a 1050ti should be pretty much good enough.

I am currently running a gaming notebook with 965m GPU and i7. Game plays fine in terms of FPS. But the settings have to be medium towards low.

Hence was thinking of an upgrade of sorts that needn't be too powerful since I play nothing else. (Sad fact)

Doesn't run well on my 1060 either.

If you are running poor on a 1060 you probably have one or more viruses on your computer.

Unless you are suggesting there is some special MWO virus that hackers have tailored to only mess up PGI games and nothing else.

edit: sig checks out for conspiracy theorist

How!? I run max everything on my 970 with very few problems, and those problems are more PGI's hackneyed coding than anything. Though, to be fair, how they get MWO to run as well as they do without resorting to blood sacrifices demands a small amount of respect.

Are you running at a strange ratio? Do you have over heating issues? 300+ background processes? I'm really curious, your 1060 should easily handle MWO, and if you have a good cooling situation, it should be sitting around 35-40C the whole time...

It's inconsistant af.

I run it at 1080. I turn a load of settings down because they look terrible, keep some high, but most maps I get maybe 70fps. Can vary anywhere between somewhere between 90 and 60. Some dips to down to the 40-50s too.

per frame render times in mwo are just high no matter what card I have ran and it's been this way since 2012 over 4 different GPUs and 3 cpus. So even with higher fps it feels much lower.

Then there are little details like the lag that happens at ToD changes or say the black screen when someone gets an ammo explosion.

CPU Heavy game and no one lists cpu specs. Anything under 3.5 GHz I assume you’re going to have a bad day.

I'm currently running a 6600k at stock clocks. And yeah, gpu upgrades have done far less than my cpu upgrades for fps in mwo.
