It's a map reader light for when it's night and you get lost on the battlefield.
Just remember to turn it off or your mech's batteries will go dead and it won't start next time.

It "dims" the light, of which there's 4 or 5 settings.
After hitting it that many times the light is completely off and only your buttons/switches "glow" in dark areas.
As for why it exists? Who knows? I find its shine during daytime very irritating so I flick it off.

(They don't run out in this game, and you have a fusion engine with weeks worth of fuel... which basically means in MWO it is infinite and never gives a concern. That only really comes up in long in depth campaigns in Battletech with people completely engrossed in "all the rules" OR in the novels when it conveniently runs out for plot reasons. The "Fuel Cell" engine is more of a battery situation.and even that refuels with water or hydrogen gas.)
