I played with the idea yesterday that automatic Long Tom strikes on inactive mechs could solve the issue, but I doubt it. People just wouldn't play it.

Not hard at all. Drop a couple dozen mechs into something like a crater with nowhere to hide and give the countdown. Every mech for itself, money is paid according to the order of dying, last man standing is best. Also see http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Grand_Melee

Good Idea with the Long Tom to enforce shrinking map size
Well it's the gimmick of the year and the likes of Fortnite are overtaking even grands like Overwatch. There is no reason why it shouldn't work for MWO, especially when you can't blame the team and it all depends on you, every wannabe hero could prove their metal

Actually the devs already pushed any kind of free for all away ad infinitum.
Their reason for doing so is that the whole game is specificaly programmed and developed around the idea of two big teams battling each other and the basic idea of free for all has been conciously excluded from the very start of game development.
Therefor the implementation would actually require major changes to the basic code of the game.
Also the idea of Solaris VII is not new. It has been discussed when the game came out and has been droped soon in favor of FP....
--> No Free for all any time near by

You'd be surprised..
Back in the golden days of CWI, it was customary to have an all out 1 vs all fight after a Trial of Position. You would be surprised how much people actually go all-out..
it was just a glorious chaos of a fight, and immensely fun..
I also enjoyed the free for all of MW4 Merc's solaris.. so i guess it would be fun if there was such a mode in MWO..

They would have to go by match score. You could hide all you want but if you dont make damage/crits you're not going to win. It would be a nice balance of hiding and attacking.

Mercstar is gonna do a unit Battle Royale event (with Urbies!) this weekend. We might stream it so keep an eye out for it.

Which is somewhat odd to me. Designing game mode parameters in CE are set out in xmls, so it's pretty straightforward and is what MWLL did for FFA solaris mode. But even if they designed it differently with their own rules, obfuscated gamemodes into compiled code, you'd still think it would be pretty compartmentalized. Not a massively weird design choice perday in hindsight, but implimentation must be very spagetti if you simply can't make it work.

Even if it was only 12 or 24 dropped randomly around a map it could be a lot of fun.
Add a few features like a radar or turret flags to capture to gain control of them could add some spice to light snipers winning.
Keep the timer and have a flag in the middle that if you capture and hold it for 1 mins you win. Anyone else who stands on it instantly drops it to neutral.
