Mech sorting assumes competence
You cannot beat an Anni with a Spider, unless there is a massive concentration of Potato
It cannot Leg Hump, as it's too tall (lanky 30 tonner VS squatter 20-25 tonners), and lacks...pretty much any firepower
Divisions can allow worthless mechs to have...well, not a worth, but a place to not be worthless
Artificial usefulness
Potato Land can confuse people, and 1v1 does play quite differently to it.
Population wise? There's a HUGE boon in that you'll never again have to play Escort or Incursion, so that's a big plus.

I think Solaris should have provided pre-canned mechs for selection for a given division...so you can have 7 divisions, but your choice of pre-built mechs, which you can earn experience with and buy specific solaris 7 skill modules for those tournamnt mechs.
In otherwords, don't BYOM (bring your own mech) to Solaris. Let people have a completely even playign field, with a more limited selection of mechs, so that peole can quickly get into a combat instead of trying to balance out 15 mechs per division with verious degres of customization.
