Mechcommander 2 Multiplayer?

I hope I'm in the correct place for this question:
Have a couple computers and managed to get the old game Mechcommander2 running in single player on all of them (but had to do a lot of online research first).
However I am unable to host a LAN game, when I click Host, the game simply crashes. It does this on all 3 computers. My family and I would really like to play, does anyone know how to make it work?

I imagine there may be an unofficial patch you may have to acquire. Things don't work like they used to.
