I've just started to play this game and I'm confused over Quick Play. When it starts I am given the choice of maps and game type, yet whenever I select the map and gameplay I want, the game ignores my choice and dumps me in some random map. This is particularly annoying if I'm in a heat intensive Mech and get put on the hottest maps. Am I doing something wrong or is it broken or what?

You get a vote, as do the other 23 players. The map and game mode that get the majority of votes is played. There is also a multiplier that increases your voting power every time your choice is not chosen.

As far as running a hot build, you'll have to learn trigger control or suffer the dreaded shut down or taking damage from overheating. Neither of which is something you want to have happen. Oh, and welcome to MWO!

Take your time getting into matches... Practice in the Testing Grounds first. Start with Terra Therma, and give yourself 30 seconds from first spotting an enemy to kill it. This will help you with your heat management skills, which is one of the biggest things in this game.
