I also play other games, and this forum and its playerbase are far and away the nicest I've participated in. There are a few trolls who seem to want to specialize in telling others how stupid/incompetent they must be, but most of the posters seem passionate about the game. Even the ones that start with things like "PGI is stupid..."

Congratulations! For helpfulness and lack of toxicity I would give this game and its community a high B, maybe even a low A.

Because we're super niche and smaller than other games. If we had the mass appeal of other games. We'd be drowning in the same toxicity.

But to be fair in the post beta days it was quite a fiery pit. A lot of the angriest people have moved on or been banned. So people left care enough to stick around. Or they're just cranky old men that can't move on. lol..

I agree, one of the best. It's rare, even for a niche community.

this games player base is a bit more hard edged than other communities. granted i dont play those military tactical shooters whos communities are utter garbage, nor do i really participate in a lot of communities in general. that said i do not view it as a bad thing. most online forums are so damn sterile and over moderated that any kind of man to man conversation is impossible. its like they are designed for children or something, with so many safety bubbles and soft corners. i dont want to feel like im in a day care.

It's because this game is full of old men.

The flipside is that everyone tends to talk to people who disagree the same way they talk to their kids. I've never seen a community that is so simultaneously gentle, yet condescending.

I generally like MWO community too, and completely agree that in comparison to others (especially F2P) multiplayer titles, MWO is nicest hands down. But more I stick around forums, more salt bags I see, forming a tall mountain. While I can see the valid reason behind some of them, at times it still feels a bit too much...

On the other hand, actual in-game community is different story. Of course from time to time you may come across bonafide A-holes, but generally people are nice, quiet or humorous (sometimes to extremes). I swear, stuff people pull off over VOIP can leave you uncontrollably laughing for solid 5 minutes, completely unable to fight. Also there are characters like Haven Kendrick, who add +1000 points to immersion just by talking. I haven't ever experienced anything similar in any other MP focused game so far, etc, etc.

But the curious thing is, I recognize maybe 5% tops from forum dwellers in-game. Feels like some people here have more fun posting than playing. Not judging though, to each their own.

Ah, the Great Banwave. Probably one of the best things to happen to this community, tbh, and absolutely why this topic exists.

Free speech and open discussion are fantastic things, but most of those caught up in the purge had little interest in that. There was so much toxic bile being strewn over every topic that it made the For Honor and LoL forums look like a Teletubbies rerun.

Something most CSRs for other game companies need to learn to do more often, or be allowed to do more often, as those toxic elements should not be left to fester.

I find this thread incredibly ironic, considering how toxic this community is in actual matches lol. Just today, I logged in for a few hours, but between the fact that after the latest patch my FPS has taken a hit on every map, the event being lackluster, and sheer player toxicity combined with roll after roll for either side, I couldn't do it, I found myself in a horrible mood after a few matches. This game brings out the worst side of me much of the time, makes me dislike myself. On other forums I've been accused of white-knighting and having rose-tinted glasses...here, I'm probably on Russ's personal hit list...he just brings it out of me like no one else.

I will admit though, the people I've gotten close with and like in this game, I like a lot, so that combined with the fact that there's simply no other "customizable giant stompy robot" games out there keep me coming back, despite the fact that I end up in a terrible mood every time I spend a few hours playing. It's kind of like a relationship with a crazy, hot chick who drives you to insanity but, you know, the sex is great.

Not really the salt / trolling / false hackusation in game is the same as any other multiplayer game. The difference of the forum if something PG13 the mods redact your post and possible temporaly forum ban you.

The community not better then any other multiplayer game the forum mods just kill those kinds forum posts

I resemble that remark you young whipper-snapper.... OLD?

Your head is firmly planted in your fourth-point-of-contact lad: get with the program and respect you elders or we'll put you in TIME OUT..... See, we can be respectful and condescending cause the "kiddies" that infest this game are really an annoying, whiny bunch of snowflakes... ONLY KIDDING !!!

On a more serious note, this is a small niche market that has a lot of Boomers that started playing MW decades ago...and, have stuck with the franchise.... MWO has and is going through a rough patch right now and we've lost a large number of players this pat year.... Maybe, that will change but, it's always best to be polite and helpful...

Aim Small, Miss Small; and, have a good time and all will work out.

In game isn't really that toxic either when you really get down to it or lets just say I have played in alot worse.

However, it can get damn frustrating at times in matches like when your entire team decides to spontaneously start the great NASCAR migration and you catch on that it is happening just about 30 seconds to late to actually move fast enough to avoid the enemy's Counter NASCAR. I think that one annoys me the most and I can get extremely salty about that when it happens.

Still for every time someone vents just a big over the top and drops an F-bomb or two, the vast majority of the time when someone shows their discontent it is rather mild and usually just criticizing not cursing.

As for the average age of MWO player. Honestly I would be it is close to 40. I mean the IP has been around for over 30 years and many of us who have stuck with the abomination PGI has generally made of this game grew up playing the Table Top game or like me played the original Mechwarrior in 1989.

For the most part the community is good. Not as great as it once was due to other games and people leaving but sill pretty nice. Lots of us will go nerd and answer question about mechs, builds and such when asked in a nice manner. A few even do mentor-student with private matches and I've seen a few units do the same.
