Assaults are best played without expecting to be fast or agile. (because the best aren't)

There is one of those - the Gargoyle.
Unfortunately, I would not recommend Gargoyles to newer players. They're very hard to play. EXEs are again pretty fast, but they require aggressive MASC usage.
Fast-ish assaults like the Battlemaster that can go ~70 odd kph with decent firepower and an LFE (or around 80 with an XL)

or

are a good starting point.
Or of course, its big brother, the BNC-3M

Clan side, there's the Marauder IIC, which is very good and also very fast. Easily hits 75kph with meta builds. I don't like HLLs very much, so here's the old build.

Honestly speaking, however, assaults tend to get focused hard and targeted by MG lights and other assorted pests, and require a lot of practice in any case (fast or slow) to be good with them.

Zeus hero. It has a 400 engine cap AND supports MASC.
On a more practical side... Cyclops 10-Q. 6xASRM-6, LFE375, strip the arms. 71 KPH is plenty for an assault mech.

Thank you everyone, I'm going to be looking into buying a suggested Assault soon. Perhaps I have to adapt my tactic's to suit an Assault, for all it's armor and fire power I find they are just such a big slow target I find them easy to take out at close range using my light and mediums in tight environments, where they might prefer open maps at medium to long range.
Or is my approach to Assaults wrong. Generally what is their ideal role and how do you best use them?

The role of an Assault is to be the biggest piece of armor, the biggest target, and deal the most damage. If you're looking for something to not be shot at, an assault is the polar opposite.
The specific role of the assault varies from mech to mech, but at the very least you should be taking enough hits to take your torso armor to red or gone before the end of the match, and dealing enough damage to take out at least 4 components. Your primary defense is twisting your torso, not running from cover to cover. You're not sneaky in an assault, unless the other team isn't paying any attention whatsoever.
It is completely different in every way from playing anything lighter than a 70t+ Heavy.

I'm usually fine as long as they can go 64 kph and with speed tweak it goes nearly 70. That is usually more than enough to make sure you can get to where you need to go and not be left behind in Nascar.

Going nearly 70 is still really fast for an assault, generally none of them do that except for the 80-85 tonners. Or if they're clan assaults. I can (usually) avoid being left behind in the Nascar in my Annihilator, just gotta keep an eye on the mini-map and start preemptively rotating once you see the enemy push happening, because you KNOW your team is gonna run away from it.

You are correct almost forgot the Linebacker with speed tweek( skill tree) can hit 104.5 kph but is a Heavy Omnimech at 65 tons and an undergunned but fast one.
