There are many artisticlly talented people in our community and I think it would be epic if PGI sponsored an art competition in conjunction with the world championships and Mech con.

My initial ideas are that after a submission period the playerbase votes on their favorites. The best get featured at Mech con (the top 25?) with copies (maybe only digital) of the artwork available for purchase by attendees and the playerbase as a whole. The top 3 could get a cash reward as well as getting some kind of recognition like a unique cockpit item (gold, silver and bronze paintbrush?). They could sign autographs or just meet fans, etc, like Shim and Alex do.

I was also thinking there could be sub-categories based on the type of artwork. Digital, pencil, paint, etc.

Artwork would be anything related to MW/BT. A favorite mech, cool combat scene or anything that can be thought of. As Jedi points out, all artwork should be original and belong to the person that submits it.

Poll about the art comp.

Thoughts? Comments? Concerns?

Cool idea and we have tons of artists but you might want to make it a point that the art should be original as quite a few people have extracted the mechs from the game. You might also want to rule out screen shots as well. I think it was one of the last years mwo wc where they had teams make their own decals, logos and such told the creators they be used then decided against it. It was poorly done on pgi's part. As an artist on the hobbist side with an eye to eventual paid commission work I try to retain as much of my rights to the work I create as possible. The copyrights and contracts college class I took was dull but very informative.

I tweeted this at Russ and he likes the idea and said I should talk to Tina. I think this has some serious potential.

Since you're working with copyrighted material, don't expect anything more than the fun factor

At best you'd get credit for it. At worst pgi will take it as submitting art to them essentially surrenders your copyrights to them.

Hmm is there a way that it could be done without artists losing their copyright?

I don't think I've ever seen an art contest run by a video game company that didn't have "all submitted art will belong to [company]" in the rules.

Not saying it doesn't or couldn't happen, just that I've never seen it.

Also, it ok for you to copyright your own work, but don't try to sell it. They have to sue you or they lose their copyright for not defending it.

You guys know the rules of fanart. Its often not exactly legal, but we do it anyway. And if we get a signal saying 'ok' from PGI, all the better.

Well, PGI shouldn't do exactly that.

Yeah I was thinking PGI would just feature the artwork, not take ownership of it basically. Kind of like how a movie theater doesn't own the movie rights but gets permission to show them.

Tina responded to my message.
Hello,

Thank you for the suggestion!
Unfortunately we cannot sell nor help sell fan-art or any content which is not created by Piranha Games.
One thing we could do related with MechCon however is similar to the event we had in 2016 where hosted a Machinima video contest. We could organize something an art work contest with cash prizes, however this is something PGI would need to organize and host.

PGI has been supportive int he past, between stuff like the Design A Cockpit Item, etc. They even provided some swag fro my K9 contests.

Yeah I think it would be super cool if they did this. Also we'll get a bunch of epic artwork, get to know new artisists, etc.

Well the results from the poll are very positive with a good trend of those interested in participating.

Tina suggested an idea but now I'm not sure what PGI is thinking on this. Honestly an epic class art comp setup by PGI is really what I was thinking. Maybe not quite as big a deal as the championships but still a big deal.

So going by the poll there is interest in PGI setting this up.

What kind of rewards for participants should there be? The top 3 are straight forward, a cash prize and a gold, silver and bronze paintbrush/palette cockpit item. How about the top 12 and so on? I know some are only interested if the prize was worth striving for, so what kind of prize would that be?

2nd question is should this just be a general which is best or should their be catagories? With catagories there could be more than one top 3 or the winners of each catagory are judged against each other.

What do you guys think?
