I think the pilot rank rating should give more weight to scouting activities than it does. I have a Raven with TAG, NARC, stealth armor and ECM. For weapons, it has a Rocket Launcher 20 and 2 ER Small Lasers. With this build I can provide a completely uninterrupted target lock on 5 or 6 enemies at once. This isn't a simple process, though, because I have to be close enough to initiate and re-establish locks while stealthed, manage the NARC timer on as many enemies as possible, watch my heat because it doesn't dissipate while stealth is active, and manage the inevitable swarm of light mechs which show up to defend the Assaults/Heavies/Mediums I'm spotting and backstabbing. I also have to know exactly where my team is because, if I get overwhelmed, my best option is to lead the enemy into the firing lanes of my allies. All this while dodging between buildings or rocks, hiding in the corners, shutting down at the right time, calling out targets etc.
However, even when my team wins, my pilot ranking doesn't improve because damage is so heavily favored. I get plenty of C-bills and XP for scouting, TAG Stealth, NARC and TAG Damage, flanking etc. and usually end up with around 1200xp and 200,000 C-bill for a win but none of it turns into an increase in pilot rank.
It's fun and I love it but it's also difficult and I can have a dramatic effect on the outcome of the match. It's frustrating to do all of that and see the "=" where the green arrows should be just because I only did 90 points of damage.
