Been thinking about the GHR range, specifically the 5J vs 5H vs Mjölnir. I like the idea of tossing on some laser vomit and either backing that up with heavy PPCs on the 5H/Mjölnir or possibly with large lasers on the 5J.

The 'Mech seems to have OK hit boxes, but the hardpoints are all over the place: In the store sometimes they are high mounted, other times low. What's the distribution on these? The 5J lacks the extra energy hardpoint of the other two, and has weaker placement of hardpoints in general as the torsos have none, but it has better armour quirks.

Thoughts? Does this 'Mech do alright in the various game modes? Or should I just stuff it and go for a Black Knight? Decisions, decisions!

Yes. The GHR-5H is one of the strongest IS laser vomit heavies in Faction Play and Quick Play.

5H is the best ATM, until PGI decides to nerf the Grasshopper again. Posted Image

The GHR-5J is basically a Jester with ~8% more podspace and ~5% more armor, but one hundred percent more frontal profile and no useful high mounts. Take a hard pass. It is not a good 'Mech. Get literally any other variant, especially the 5H or 5P, and the Hopper is actually one of the better IS heavies... but the 5J is easily one of the worst machines in its entire weight class.

Sweet, cheers fellas. The H looks good, the shoulder level mounts are lovely and remind me of Shadowhawk-on-release levels of potential ownage.

The hardpoints in the side torsos start at the waist, then the next 1 or 2 are shoulder height.
1 = bad
2 = good
3 = better

Definitely skip the GHR-5J, easily the worst Grashopper, hence all the quirks to make up for it.

I'd grab the GHR-5H or GHR-5P, as others suggest.

If you like the chassis after piloting those, the Mjölnir is a solid Hero.

The Grasshopper is a great IS Heavy. Probably why it gets nerfed by pgi like every patch. The 5H is probably the strongest since its hardpoints. The 5J probably the weakest, but has the better quirks. But saying that, all the Grasshopers are decent.

3er large lasers, 5 or 4 er medium lasers.

It’s the opposite of the BK, in a good way. BK is all about hating your waist high mounts, and not having the jump jets to correct that.

I bought the 5H eventually and it's great, the torso mounts are very conveniently placed and piloting it feels like driving an energy only Shadowhawk that's been going to the gym.

nope they suck

No, the 5H and 5P are solid as mid range lasvomit mechs. I actually prefer the Grasshopper-5H over Warhammer-6D when it comes to mid range vomit. Of course, Hellbringer is the best mech for the job but Clan tech OP anyway.

They do suck, if you compare to typical Clan laservomit mechs. If you already have mechs like Hellbringer, you are just wasting your cbills.

To be honest, if we are only talking about IS-only laservomit, I would actually go for mechs like Jester or even marauder because they do have superior frontal profile which are really good for an laservomit mech.

Problem is other than Grasshopper, Warhammer and Roughneck, those mechs with superior hitboxes are semi-locked behind paywall (they are all hero mechs).

Personally, as I said in the first sentence, I really would not waste time on getting IS laserboats unless your goal is collecting mechs.

.......OH yes, I almost forgot. I did not even realize FP still exist. I thought PGI has already euthanized this mode which almost nobody plays. After all, I don't even see FP being mentioned in a recent road map!!!

.....To be honest, I'd rather get stuffs like Battlemasters or even Banshees as an laserbomb, since IS tonnage is rather huge. But alas it seems Annihilator wall is the best tactics for IS for now...

I might have stuck some Heavy PPCs on it and started poptarting about like a child on smarties. The legs get absolutely knackered by the end of a fight, but it's far more fun. I'm debating the point of the jump jet tree which I filled out for extra lift, might be better to just put the points into mobility.

yes, PGI ignoring the one mode that keeps me in this game is *******
but: hoppers are good laserboats, ignore that all you will.
1x battlehamster, 2x hoppers and a 40tonner to taste is a decent dropdeck for quite a few maps&modes, no matter how you look at it.

That's the best use of a Grasshopper IMO... it's a lot of fun. If I want a laser vomit boat I use my WHM-6D... but the Grasshopper is great for PPC jump sniping.
