You can start the install of PTS normally, then as it goes to the patching phase in few mins, quit it. Then copy your MWO install from the Steam directory, default is under C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\MechWarrior Online . Make sure you paste the directory correcly not creating a new extra subdirectory into the PTS install. The nearly empty PTS directory should already have some directories to orientate.

Then start the portal again, select PTS, then select repair tool on the menu on upper left corner. Then select options, where you probably want to unselect some of the options about resetting your settings. Then click scan and later fix. It will first hash all files to check them, on HDD it takes quite a while, then it will download some of the files it considers wrong. I forgot to check how long it takes but it takes a lot less download than the whole 19 GB nominal. And the protip suggested by the portal doesn't work if you have only Steam install.

Both normal portal installed game as well as Steam are the same. So you can copy your normal game version over to the PTS directory and then run the repair tool, like described above. With HDD it takes maybe 30 mins of total, with SSD it's a lot faster.

The portal even suggest doing roughly this, but I wrote this because the portal doesn't know about Steam so it won't find the Steam installed MWO and use those files as local source.

After the scan the patcher claimed >150 files to download. One and a half hour later I aborted the download of file no. 8. This is nothing for a a 230kByte/s connection.

And you did have a current live version you copied over to the PTS directory? Because that's about half of all files. The changed files from current version to PTS is less than 10.

This bit here in particular would have saved me an hour's worth of head scratching if it were clarified by PGI... I kept trying to run the executable "MWO Repair Tool" within the "MWO Portal" folder, resulting in an error, because I did not know the process for properly using the repair tool, being that it was hidden in that top left drop down menu in the portal.

Thanks.
