Here's a cool idea. The best way to present it is through a hypothetical. Say it is the beginning of the game, and you have a Flea. After you play a few matches, you unlock buyyour first medium 'Mech . At the same time, you also got lowered prices on three other light 'Mechs. The game recognized that you were using light 'Mechs, and gave you more light 'Mech choices. You start using the medium 'Mech, and unlock got a good deal on one light 'Mech and a deal on one medium 'Mech. Now the game has let you have a lowered price on another medium 'Mech, but is not quite ready to close the door on the light 'Mechs that you previously used. Also, I believe that it should be just as difficult expensive to get a good light 'Mech as it is to get a good assault one. I don't think quality should be easier to get just because of weight class. That is all.
Update:
Well, prices could be lowered and other factors may come into play. It's just that the DevBlogs are sometimes vague and they may change their minds. Something doesn't appeal to me about having an assault 'Mech ready for you on your first match. Upon reading the DevBlog, I believe that he was not downing this sort of idea, but merely stating that so-and-so faction wil not have so-and-so 'Mech while so-and-so faction won't. Also, with the leveling discussion, I now believe that this could be implemented as a price discount, not as a leveling bonus. I may be wrong, but that's where others come in to correct me.

Well, this game won't be working on unlocks. Bryan Ekman explained, in Dev Blog 2, that everything would be available to everyone from the get-go.

They've said quite specifically you'll be able to start in an assault mech. You'll be able to buy any mech you want day one. Faction (presumably LP) will affect the price. I'm sure the progression you're talking about will be handled through LP.

Thanks. That clears things up. It's an idea, but implementation is the other half of success. Also, day one seems like an exaggeration. You may be able to buy it, but odds are you won't have the money to.

It will be interesting to see how they implement this.

It will also be interesting to see who chooses what to pilot.

I've almost always been a heavy Mech pilot, staying as long as possible in the 65-75 ton range. I never stepped into an assault mech in any of the MW games unless it was impossible to win the mission without doing so, which it sometimes was.

But I'd always get back into the heavy when possible. It will be interesting to see if MWO changes my favored weight class.

The whole progression mechanics might actually be tied to a specific Mech chassis at first. Meaning you would unlock/gain affinity to varaints of the stock chassis. And once through that part, you would eventually progree to another chassis. Stating you can "buy every Mech" like stated, doesn't necessarily imply you'll be very proficient in that Mech you just started off with. And you might need to gain some proficiency on that chassis first, before you become eligible for variants of even basic customization.

Sounds actually quite reasonable, usually you don't start pimping the car you just bought brand-new on day one. You spend some time getting used to it, a "feel" for it, before you think about tweaks. And that way pilot/mech skill comes more into play than just on the level of having played X games with it. Would make for actually a way more interesting progression pathway.
