Do you expect them to test every variant on every patch? That seems like a huge waste of manpower to me, considering how many there are.

We once had a so-called "software developer" who was assigned to one of my projects. Given that it took me less than 5 minutes to prove -- every bloody single time -- that he never even bothered to test his work on a use case I personally defined in detail for him, well, let's just say he quickly was removed from my said project.
