I've always heard this "Whale" term thrown around. Is there a defined amount of $$ you have to throw at this game to consider yourself a Whale ? is $1000 the thresh hold to be considered a whale ?

PS: When i think about how much money I've thrown into this game(i'm sure others have thrown in a lot more than me) i cant reconcile in my head how i ended up spending so much. Its almost indicative of an overall spending addiction.

Ive always considered Whales to be guaranteed sales.

The ones who DO want to buy that mekpak thank you very much.

Since closed beta Im sure Ive spent a lot of money but its also been a long time of consistent gaming. I dont think Im a whale though.

And as a side note, to this day it hurts to see how awesome that Dire Wolf art was vs what we got :(

I’m a Whale but I’m no longer buying any mechs anymore. Current state of the game isn’t fun and feedback given since Dec 2017 at the last mechcon has been ignored.

Currently between $4000-$5000 on mwo not including the expenses of my trips (airfare, rental, and hotels) to MechCon other than tickets and merchandise.

Those Gold mechs bring back memories, completely forgot about them even existing! I can't really ever recall seeing them used ingame. I remember seeing one (well having one in my game when they first came out) however they were instantly team killed at start of the match. xD

The only "Whales" I've ever heard associated with MWO are "Dire Whales", aka a derogatory nick name for Dire Wolves because they're big, slow, and thus easy targets.

The really sad part about those gold mechs is that the Stormcrow is the only one that's actually a good chassis. The Warhawk doesn't have enough hardpoints, the Dire Whale is too big and fragile, the Summoner is nerfed by lack of pod space and fixed FF, the Timber Wolf is sluggish, and the Adder is too big and slow for its size.

The Thor is great when you load in twin ERPPCs in your nipple hardpoints.

Depends on the game in question. Some have more paying customers, other have less.
The general idea is simple. Whales are those who spend enough that, if they all stopped spending, the game would go under.

The MW:O is kept afloat through mech packs. In essence, you're looking at some $30-35/month. Though it depends on just how generous people are with the ultimate packs and what-not.

I think a whale is anyone who spends between 20 - 40 bucks on MWO monthly .

A whale is someone who bought bitcoin between 2010-2016. Thousands converted into millions now they splash around the market creating waves of red or green candle sticks based on their mood. This is a whale.

i first heard the term in reference to casinos. the big gamblers with seemingly limitless money to burn and not a lot else to do. casino owners make sure they have a good time while they are there because they know they can rake in the money just by them being there. they can also get you in trouble with the gambling commission if they start winning and you cant cover it. needless to say so long as there have been casinos this was true, so its a very very old term.

its no wonder f2p games use the term.

People like running it that way, but you're still putting the weapons of a 35 ton mech on a bigger, slower 70 ton mech that happens to also have JJs.

The only light mech that can compare in this aspect is the Adder Prime, which only works because of its weapon quirkage. However, you're going to have lower hardpoints (if you mount your ERPPCs in the Adder's torso you can't get the juicy velocity and heat quirks, making it just straight-up worse), less durability, less heat efficiency, and the inability to poptart.
