SRMs dont really compete with MRMs though. You cant get anywhere near 60 damage alphas with SRMs like you can with MRM60. And SRMs are much shorter range too.

I mean, that's a part of the reason that in lore the Atlas had a large LRM and a SRM6.

Thats part of the problem with Atlas brawlers (the other part being the agility nerfs). SRMs just arnt where they need to be compared to MRMs. The Atlas-S really suffers from SRM4s and SRM6s not being as strong as they should be.

SRMs when en mass or when close up out perform MRMs just that little bit because of the fewer missiles per trigger pull but higher damage per missile concentrates the damage a bit more. However, that's kind of besides the point as SRMs are more secondary weapons when on larger mechs while MRMs are usually primary weapons.

They did recently buff the SRM6 with a slightly faster cooldown, that was a step in the right direction, but it still wasnt enough to make SRMs better than MRMs under 270m. SRMs need to be buffed even more. SRMs should be absolutely devastating under 270m and theyre just not.

I mean, they can be when paired with the right weapon. They're more of a force multiplier weapon, not much on their own but makes weapons they're paired with exponentially more deadly. Meanwhile MRMs have a higher base usability, but isn't adjusted as much by other weapons. Now, the only buff I feel the SRMs may need is increasing base velocity to match the AC/20.
