On August 5th, Bryan Ekman posted this tweet about unit creation being changed from needing the ~200M C-bills (for the dropship purchase) to being free.

In a sense, that's understandable. The portion of CW that requires the dropship isn't in the game, so why force players to spend a large number of C-bills on something they can't use.

However, having unit creation be free can cause other issues. There is nothing to prevent malicious players from creating "name camping" units. As soon as the module goes live, any player could create a merc unit with the name of well known units, preventing them from creating a unit with the name they've already been playing under for the past couple of years.

Therefore, unit creation should still cost something, like 10 million C-bills. Those C-bills can go into the unit coffer or could be lost. But the important part is that it creates a barrier from creating units for name squatting/griefing.

A malicious player could still create an alt account and play through enough cadet bonuses to create a bogus unit for griefing, but that at least requires some amount of time commitment that will act as a deterrent and provide time for legitimate units that have been preparing for this release to create their units.

I agree that the unit creation should cost something, but it'd also be nice for the barrier to entry be more like 25 Million Cbills, and have 5 Million just disappear for the sake of unit registration with MRBC - the rest go into the unit coffers to buy the initial mechs for the unit to have - 20 Million is enough for a Company of Light mechs like the Commando and Locust which is accurate to what Mercs would likely start with. Either that or they can purchase a single lance of Mediums.

Depends on how the contracting system will ultimately be setup.

But having some sort of barrier to entry would be beneficial to prevent some of the most basic forms of griefing.

Rest in peace casual players.
They are on life support in CW now.
But I mean if you want hardcore 12 v 12 only, who are we to argue.
