In Tabletop? You had to use spotlights and headlights.
Seriously. Several mechs came with them (the Warhammer for instance), although they were a purely zero-tonnage, zero crit fluff item for RPing. There's a night mission in MW4 Mercenaries where you have to use spot lights to see where you're going. Night vision? Thermal vision? What were those?

Not that I advocate the change, seems like a low priority deal...

Thanks for clarifying that this isn't a recent change

But yeah, after returning from my hiatus, I don't use Night Vision at all (though I recall using it prior to hiatus). I use Heat Vision about 50% of the time in-game, sometimes more.

when you see targets at 1km out they are just black pixels without many contours.
maps with good contrasts (Polar, HPG, Canyon, Frozen) allow to see and shoot them at every range.
it's a nice gimmick those different vision modes but for a game the dev thinks it is for competitive games it's a bad feature

Same here. What's worse, zooming in on night/daytime shift is causing flickering which is super annoying.
What makes it even worse is that i can't see anything on maxed out settings but can see pretty much fine if i drop settings to low/medium. That's a no-no for me, being forced to "uglify" the game to not gimp myself.

Been running a mod for a couple of weeks now, it just adds shaders on top of the game.

Some comparison..
