So i was talking to this guy about my system and he had a MSI 1050 he was not using and basically said if i paid the shipping he would send it to me. Said it was brand new and he had no use for it so might as well give it to me rather than let it sit in a box in the closet.. It would upgrade my TI-550 which is in dire need.

So i got the card and put it in my old comp and booted it up and everything was fine to double check the card and the comp booted fine, so i shut it down and pulled the card and then i installed it in my newer system after removing the drivers i pulled the card and put in the 1050

When i tried to boot. The comp did not Post and just shut down and then restarted but nothing happened. No keyboard flashing lights, no screen, no nothing. I pulled out the card, and trieded to boot with no card and nothing again. the comp would just start for a sec, shut down, restart, but do nothing. The only way to shut it off was the power switch on the back. So I let the comp sit a few mins, and re-installed my 550, and tried to boot again and the comp went directly into bios saying overclock did not work. (i didn't touch the bios prior) I reset the bios to defaults and tired again.

Finally the comp posted, but the HD needed to run scans which took about 10 mins before it finally launched. But once it was running i was having some issues with my HD going 100% until i ran Checkdisk, and everything finally smoothed out and seams to be working.. (perhaps all that trying to boot, and not proper shut downs screwed things up) This all took me about 3 hours to get my comp sorted out which thankfully i did

I then took the card and put it back in my old duo-core system, and it posted and booted just fine. (i'm reinstalling win7 on that system and everything seams to be working just fine)

Anyone have any clue why the card that works on my old duo-core 8600 and is just fine, completely borks my I5-3350?

I have a few ideas,

i didn't restart after removing the drivers and something got wonky?

z77-A asus board needs a bios update to work with the card? (not sure why it would, or why my old p5n-d was fine with out doing that)

Asus MB's and MSI vid cards don't play nice together?

I'm at a loss..

Not enough info but between the TI-550 and the 1050GTX, across 2 different rigs, I'm thinking power supply & consumption.

Supply: what's the wattage of your PSU on both rigs?

Consumpton: The TI-550 has one 6-pin external power connector, but most 1050GTXs don't have one, instead draw all power needed from the PCI-E card slot. Does your 1050 have an external power connector?

swap out your PSU from the old rig to the new one

i would rule that out. i've never seen all hardware working in different rigs and then not work when mixed up
1. would still give you console output which has nothing to do with drivers
2. bios upgrade aren't needed for console output
3. we've got standards for that Posted Image

550 ti draws 41 more watts than the 1050 but is supplimented by a 6 pin power connector.
the 1050 has to draw it's 75 watts solely from the pci-e slot.

my best bet would be that your PSU cannot provide enough juice over the 24 pin atx connector

That description sounds a bit like your power supply flaking out.

Wouldn't cause restart on POST, much less the boot loop.

Worth trying.

Those two things are not alike. Your newer system has PCI-E 3.0 with a controller in your CPU, whereas the older one has PCI-E 2.0 and its' controller is built into the motherboard.

I used to have an old PC where I had 2 memsticks, the thing worked fine but if I swapped the memsticks around, the rig refused to boot. Swap them back and it's back to normal.

I'm pretty sure the power supply is fine, it is pretty new, It's a 620w, My old one is from 2008 and 500w. My system has been basically rock solid, i never have DC or shut down issues, only as of late i've had a two weird bluescreens. (not the error bluescreen, but some weird ilght blue one that looks like scratches, with only the lower right side toolbar or bottom of the wait screen showing.. a restart solves that issue, but it's only happened twice, once coming back from sleep a few weeks back, and once today after i got the system running again.

maybe that is a PS issue?? i really don't know, i more thought maybe my vid card was crapping out as i've had it since 2012

My PS is a cooler master M2 silent pro 620w. Is there a program that i can track my power to see if there is an issue? I also have a volt meter, but i am unsure how to check a comp PS with it. I think it is still under factory warranty if that is the case.

The 1050 and the TI-550 both have the 6 pin connector

Yea, i didn't think the driver thing would cause that, but it was all i could think off.. And yea, it really makes me wonder why the pCI 2.0 would not have the issue that the 3.0 did.

hehe When i built this system and tired to get online i couldn't. I thought the MB was bad so i sent it back into support, they checked it, and sent it back saying it worked, but it didn't. I'd be online with my Duo-core, just fine, i'd plug the cat-5 into this one and nothing. Finally my friend came over and changed the connector end and it worked. Why i could get online one the old computer and not this one is still a mystery. Ghost in the machine?

Old system
vid card old, GTX9800 or TI-550 Both asus.
Asus p5n-D,
intel 8600 duocore,
mushkin enhanced DDR2, 1066 (pc 8500)

Turbolink switching power supply model ATX CW500P4
115-230V 12A-6A current, 60/50 Hz
3.3v@17A +5v@25A, +12v1@16A, +12v2@18A, -12v@0BA, -5v@ 0.5A, 5VSB@3.0A

newer system
(vid card TI-550) swapped it to the new with plans to replace eventually)
Asus z77-A
intel i5-3550P
corsair vengeneance DDR3 1866(pc 1500) 8GB
seagate ST100DM003 1TB
coolermaster M2- 620W
  • 100 - 240 V 47 - 63 Hz
  • +3.3V@30A, +5V@30A, +12V1@70A, +12V2@55A, -12V@0.3A, +5VSB@3.5A
https://www.newegg.c...N82E16817171068

basically as you can see unless there is something seriously wrong with my PS, that has not shown up till now, the new one is much better no? Though i do notice that the old one has an extra power number, being the -5v@ 0.5A, so the old has 7 stats listed the new 6, could that be the issue?

Like i said, both the MSI 1050 https://www.newegg.c...N82E16814137058

and the TI-550 https://www.newegg.c...N6947-_-Product

have the 6 pin power connector though.. and the specs on the 1050 say my PS should easily power it no?

Have you checked on your boards memory qvl? https://www.asus.com...A/HelpDesk_QVL/

If you'r dram isn't in the list it can (not a must) cause sporadic and irregular issues.
I can check if you tell me your dram id, or you check it yourself with the link above.
Sometimes, a board needs a bios update prior to installing newer (added) drams.

On first glance, i can't find your 3550p in thee qvl either (tho, that might not say anything but it's worth checking).

It shows your motherboard has a built in graphics card so it should boot up without your 1050 installed (easy way to tule out your graphics card as the offender).

Troubleshooting order:

PSU, board, cpu (with fan), 1 dram in single slot config (the right dram slot, check your board manual).
boot up.
continues beeping -> check dram (switch dram module)
no boot up, psu clicking out and restarting -> check psu
nothing -> check wiring -> check psu (use different psu)

some troubleshooting strategies:

if your computer has onboard video, try removing the video card and booting on the onboard video only. then shut it off and try putting the new card in there. this can also be useful if you need to purge old drivers. but if you cant post thats probibly not even an issue.

check bios settings and look for any pcie compatibility options.

try updating your bios. they often patch problems like this.

try booting with the other power supply. ive seen two pieces of perfectly functioning hardware that just dont get along, and the psu is no exception.

start disconnecting other hardware to try eliminating other possible points of failure.

try another pcie slot.

look up the post codes in your mobo manual. and make sure what ever the error may be is caused by the video card.

and most importantly, wiggle things.

just two more things till im at a complete loss

try booting your system without the graphics card.
since it has internal gfx support you should have a console output

try the other power supply

also it's a bit odd you link to https://www.newegg.c...N82E16814137058 yet, the ppl there say it doesnt need a 6 pin, and https://www.hardware...g-review/all/1/ shows your card should not have a 6 pin

just to get it right

the 550 ti works in both systems
the 1050 only works in the core-2-duo system
correct?

i know my 750ti was like that. it didnt have power connectors at all and just drew its power from the pcie slot. undervoltage problems up the wazoo as it was always competing with the mobo for power rather than have its own dedicated line. meanwhile an older even more power hungry video card had no problems with it pulling its juice from the psu.

Ok... So i pulled the card out of my old comp and read the part number.. The guy was wrong in thinking it was a 1050 TI, He said his buddy bought it, but never used it and gave it to him and he never used it either.., I think it is a AMD card, the part number is

R7 360 2GB OC which according to a search is an AMD card! Which on new egg has the pictures of the 6 pin! https://www.newegg.c...N82E16814127888 If you click on the extra pictures icon, one of um shows it.. It is an MSI afterburner

So now it has me wondering if maybe the old nivida drivers were causing some sort of conflict on boot? I think i'm making progress lol..

that also is starting to make since why it is working on my old system as i did a fresh windows install, so it has no left over drivers or anything, so no way to cause a conflict right? I know AMD and nivida don't play nice, and back in the day i always needed to do a format to get things working on switches with fresh installs but i haven't had an AMD card or chip since my old win 2k system that i played SWG on back around 2003. I did upgrade that sytem a bit with an old ati 9800, though i forget the chip i had in it, started with a 2600, but i think i upgraded to like a 3200 or something like that.. kinda hard to recall but that is not really the point, but ya think that could be the real issue here? Fresh install would be needed?

Hmmm.. So how can i test that? Do you know of any monitoring software, or ways to check it outside buying a new one? I'll try contacting coolermaster support then..

If it is, maybe i can get them to fix it, if not.. any thoughts on a quality PS? I bought this one because the reviews were pretty good, and the price was nice.. i think i paid 70 bucks, It had a 20 or 25 dollar rebate. Not sure if it is still under warranty though, i just checked i bought it 1-02-14, so that is a bit over 4 years old at this point. :(

software wont help
outside of borrowing a psu from neighbour/frieds/collegue and without the atx 2.0 connectors with the old psu there would be a hard time ruling it out

old card (550 ti) works in both rigs, right?
new card (R7 360) only ever works in old rig, right?

either your mainboard or the new card had forgotten how to pci-e 3.0...
or
the coolermaster psu is at fault...

that is correct on the cards..

So say it actually is the PS, how does this one sound? I know corsair makes a good product, and it on sale, and has a mail in rebate, so would cost me 40 bucks. All these new connectors, i am not sure if it is compatible.

https://www.newegg.c...N82E16817139200

found this one too for about the same price.. i think it has the right connections https://www.newegg.c...N82E16817438146

It is just confusing me why is all, does that card use more juice or something? Man electornics can really piss me off sometimes
