We all know about the Hashtag, # which at one time was simply called the Pound Sign. But here's a joke you can pull. Get an index card or sheet of paper, and tell someone you have discovered the hidden secret of the Hashtag. When you get their interest, draw out a large hashtag on the paper, and immediately either put a X or an O in the middle square. Then say "You're Turn" as you hand them the pen. For those of you who have played Tic-Tac-Toe, enjoy the humor...For the rest of you who don't understand this concept--there is no hope.

frankly i honestly dont know what they are used for. people spew hash tags all the time and i often wonder if they know what they are for.

ive used similar things in my own code. just preceding your key - value pairs with some symbol makes the data a lot easier to pattern match out of a text file or any other data stream. my game engine uses cash tags ($) in all of its data entry files anything between that and the first instance of white space is the key, then between the end of that white space and the next instance of white space, or the cr/lf characters, or some termination character is your data. the interesting thing is it sounds complicated but its just all done with one line of code.
