Is there any significance in which mech you select when renewing / signing a patron contract?

Does it carry the same weight as signifying you're "ready" when sitting in the QP/FW pre-match waiting room (zero)?

No it doesn't matter.

It is global and not dependant on mechs. The mech bonuses (if applicable) apply later.
