The Champ is a viable gundam with decent build options. I've also found it to be surprisingly XL-friendly because I die from CT coring much more than other deaths (but that might also be due to my baddie staring tendencies, you decide).

I stand by what I said before. It's a 60 tonner - as in a half-medium. The hitboxes are either huge or narrow depending on your facing and the arms can be great for shielding. It's like to get CTed before ST loss but you can twist in it - just you need to DAB. Flip them arms up and you'll do alright.
It lacks the pure tankiness of the Roughneck but it's more survivable than the crab and can carry some better firepower and loadout options.
The biggest problem it has is that it's not an IV4 and there's some strong 55 and 65 ton options so the 60 ton slot isn't a must-have.

Its not very good. You can put pretty big engines in there, but if you wanne play around with ac20 for instance (which is a bad choice cause IS ac20 sucks as I can walk faster than ac20 flies) then youll have to get pretty close. Its too big to trade well in these scenarios. Theres mechs that are way better in terms of profile, dmg spreading capabilites. Its mediocre at best. I tired to play with them a bit, but theyre not special in any way and the loadouts arent that great. THeres tons of much better mechs.
I sold all champions immediately when I realized how many flaws they have.

I think you're selling the Champion a bit short. Yes it's ugly, yes it has huge pontoon arms, and yes it's not a good corner-peeking mechs, but it's a good hill-peeker. I'm having a hard time thinking of another Inner Sphere mech under 70 tons that can bring a 50 point pinpoint alpha to the field, and the Champion has two builds that can do it (CHP-1N2 and CHP-3N).
If you don't feel comfortable getting close with the AC20 or Heavy Gauss you can instead opt for the sandblaster approach with MRMs to stay outside 300m. Taking the 3N from above I can turn it into this build which offers a 30 pinpoint damage and an extra 40 points of sandblasting at just under 400m without range nodes. Peek, fire, retreat. The CHP-1N can also do MRM60 plus 2ERMLs, but for that build you may as well get the IV-Four (though still viable if you don't want to buy the IV-Four with MC).

I think the Champion is boosted by "not a threat" syndrome, I feel like I'm doing way more damage than I should in an XL (unquirked) Ac2 heavy.

Blasphemy, the 60-ton bracket includes the Rifleman, Mad Dog, I don't know if the HLF is any good but it certainly has potential if the hitboxes don't hold it back. On the strength of the RFL (all variants), MDD, and IV4 the 60-tonners are almost certainly the most underrated fighters in the game.

I'm a fan of the Champion, probably my favorite 60 tonner. Builds I run include 2 LB10 4 ML, HGauss 5ML, 2 PPC UAC5 AC5, and 2 UAC5 3 LPPC.

it's a beast at brawling
it's not so good at hill humping & corner peeking
I like to stay mobile and move and shoot. Mobility is like armor in this game anyways.
always make sure this monster moves at least around 80 kph else your to fat to do anything
Its basically a confused heavy that still thinks its a med if you get what I mean.
I like to use an uac10, 5 small lasers and 2x artemis srm6's on mine.
I've been considering an XL360 engine loadout for mine..just for the lols.

Agility and shield arms are great.
