Hi all,

I started playing the game (1.5-2 months) and have been having a blast. Bought the Solaris pack to begin, then got a few of the hero mech bundles when there was a sale.

Now with this current sale I'm thinking of getting one whole chassis pack (ultimate version). I'm having trouble deciding between a bunch of the chassis available, so I wanted some input on what one people think is the best to grab. I run mainly mediums and heavies, but have a blast with lights often.

I rarely run Assault mechs, mainly because I get rolled hard when I do run one. I need to work a lot more to polish my positioning with the slower and larger silhouette equipment, so I know it's an issue with my piloting for that class.

The chassis' I'm thinking about purchasing are...
Marauder (MAD)
Roughneck (RGH)
Thanatos (TNS)
Sunspider (SNS)
Blood Asp (BAS)
Mad Cat Mark II (MC-II)
Marauder-IIC (MAD-IIC)
Supernova (SNV)

My understanding is that the Assaults I'm considering above are some of the faster variants, and have a good mix of hard-points or build options. I want to learn how to pilot that weight class effectively, so I've got to start somewhere.

Thanks in advance to any help!

Well with the understanding that your already intending on violating my general advice for spending money on MWO (IE: Dont) - all your picks are fairly solid machines, though thanatos and sunspider lag behind the others a bit while the marauders and MK2 pull ahead of the pack and the roughneck has some of the more absurd overcranked quirks in the game.

Mad Cat II is one of the best mechs in the game. Though if you were c-bill starved. I would say get the Kodiak and sell 2 of the 3 X400s. Then just swap the remaining one between the three. Hobomechwarrior tactics. >.>

The problem with the Mad Cat pack is that the MCII-2 and MCII-4 are generally considered the weakest of the Mad Cats, so the best ones are in refinforcements and heroes. It's probably the most powerful pack, with the MCII-B being probably the best quick play assault mech in the game.

So yea, if you're gonna buy the full Ultimate pack, MCII is the way to go. Best mechs / builds in that are -

MCII-1: 2 Gauss, 2 ERLL, 2 ERML
MCII-DS: 2 Gauss, 2 ERLL, 4 ERML
MCII-B: 2 Ultra 10, 2 Ultra 5
MCII-2: 2 LBX20, 4 SRM6
MCII-4: 4 LRM20
MCII-A - Sell it for C-Bills so you can customize the other ones.

One thing to mention is the Annual Rewards. Depending on what you are and aren't qualified for you might want to direct your purchases towards getting the Rifleman, Night Gyr, Warhammer, and/or Marauder IIC rewards mechs. Your Solaris 7 pack should already qualify you for the Javelin rewards mech.

Using the sale to get one $14 base pack of the Marauder, Roughneck, or Thanatos would qualify you for the Rifleman and getting a $14 base pack of one of the Clan mechs qualifies you for the Night Gyr, so spending $28 a certain way would get you two extra mechs instead of only one of them while spending $49 for an Ultimate pack. Personally the 6 ballistic Javelin, jumping Rifleman, and ECM Night Gyr are the rewards mechs I'm interested in as they bring something new to their respective mech chassis.

Spending $56 on two collector packs (either both Inner Sphere or both Clan, but not one of each) would qualify you for either the Rifleman and Warhammer (with two Inner Sphere collector packs), or the Night Gyr and Marauder IIC (with two clan collector packs).

You can check what you qualify for on this page.

Hrm, which pack is this? I don't see the mad cat pack listed in the store.

The Mad Cat Mk II is in the Civil War pack along with the Uziel, Annihilator, and Cougar.

Mad Cat is great but if you want something less expensive or prefer IS tech, you can never go wrong with the Roughneck. Definitely one of the most all-round solid and flexible mechs in the game.

Lots of great answers, my two cents:

Marauder - good geomtry and hardpoints, it will always be viable
Roughneck - high hardpoints means it will also likely always be viable
Thanatos - sexy, but my understanding is that it's relatively fragile (never piloted). It makes good use of ECM and Stealth Armor, so if that's what you're looking for, by all means.
Sunspider - Can't advise, but I see them often enough to assume they are viable.
Blood Asp - Same as Sunspider
Mad Cat Mk II - Top-tier assault, great with ballistic or mixed ballistic/laser builds.
Marauder IIC - Top-tier assault, great with laser vomit
Supernova - I'd advise against this simply because I often see irrelevant SNVs in matches. Let's just say my blood has never gone cold seeing a Supernova turn that corner - and if I'm in a light, I actually get excited. I always think of it as a slightly larger MAD-IIC with poor hardpoints that force you into suboptimal builds.

Well i am primarily an IS player..

the top tier IS rewards, meaning the two is mechs seam like they are going to be fairly decent, and the C-bill bonus is nice too.

My advice for a new player that has some cash you might wanna pick up resistance II. The pack is just over 50 bucks.. comes with 2 months banked premium, meaning you can activate it when ever you want, 4 +30% c-bill chassis, all of which are good versions of said mechs) 12 bays, Every faction camo for the 4 chassis, and A whole lotta paint. 24 colors i think. (if you want paint and are going to spend any amount of money on it in the future, this is the best way to do it by far.. Unless of course you want some funky colors, but this pack has great variety and many normal/wanted colors.. Red, white, green, blue, black, yellow ect..)

the wolfhound and Crab are both top performing IS mechs even in FW and comp. Both are fast and tanky and put out good DPS.

The Black Knight is just a fun energy boat, Not a top mech, but perfectly useable, and a pretty solid brawler and corner poker these days.

the Mauler does do PPC's and Dakka fairly well and they are just fun mechs. Not super slow, but more of a longer range support assault.. Just make sure you use your armor, like starting the push, and letting the real brawlers hit with fresh armor as you Dakka away.

Now your tacking on 2 more loyalty mechs which are both solid, for 50 bucks with all the paint/bays/premium and 4 c-bill ginders in the pack.. it's actually a pretty solid deal. I bought the package 2+ years ago now, and wish i bought it 2 years eariler.. I use all the mechs outside of the maulers often.. (i just don't play assaults that much) Basically the pack for what you get and a Cbill crab and wolfhound are more than worth it.

Gonna second everything Daxioin said. I picked up Resistance II over the past couple months and it has been very fun. On top of the 12 'mechs and premium time, you get 36 colors with the Mauler Pack, plus 6 camo patterns per 'mech in the pack, and 6 sets of cockpit items.

So many mechs, so little time...Posted Image

As Ruccus said earlier, whatever you do, make sure your purchase qualifies you for the most number of reward mechs. As for specifics, you won't go far wrong with the Marauder (both IS and Clan), the Roughneck and the MCII.

Good hunting,
CFC Conky
