Umm, are you sure you played prior to the current skill tree? I'm only asking because getting your mech elited in the old system was a 2x multiplier to all basics, which was a huge deal, and made a big difference compared to an unskilled mech. Not to mention unlocking another module slot when fully mastered, which meant you could run Radar Dep, Seismic, and two weapons modules.

The old skills were mostly mobility/agility increases though, which are less significant than being able to take ~20% more damage and deal damage faster and longer. Plus, the old skills, because they were mostly agility-based, and pre-engine desync, had little to no benefit for mechs under about 60 tons. Mechs were already so agile that the benefits weren't a significant advantage. For most mechs, the only important ones were speed tweak and cool run, which we still have, plus many more advantages.

Old: Hot builds get higher sustained DPS, and everyone gets increased speed.
New: Same as above, but also able take 20% more damage, take reduced crits, have more ammo, and you have have to spend CBill too, so new players are often playing with under-equipped mechs because they picked something up that has a standard engine, SHS, and standard armour/structure, and they can't afford to upgrade because they have to buy skill points.

Double efficiency of cool run and heat containment on old tree was much higher numbers than what we can get in current tree. It was a big boost. Utility Modules cost 6 million x2, and weaons modules cost 3 million x 2 as well, but then those could be shared across mechs, aka Russ's Cheapskates. If you think the agility from the old tree didn't help, I don't know what to tell you.

It takes less time now to grind up a single mech than it used to grind up 3 mechs to get on par with someone with a fully skilled mech.
