Firing a weapon generates heat; accumulated heat dissipates with time. When heat exceeds certain limit (heat capacity) a mech starts to take internal damage until heat goes below the limit; this is known as overheating state.
To prevent a mech from overheating a player gets visual and sound alert at 90% capacity, heat scale indicator color changes to red on 80%, and a mech is forced to shut down at 100%. You can cancel the shut down but switching to 'override' mode, which put huge red flashing 'OVERRIDE ENGAGED' warning on your screen. This override warning is very annoying and distracting.
Unfortunately none of these measures prevents you from overheating. The shutdown is awful: you risk loosing control of your mech in front of enemies or get nasty warning which ruins game experience.
To prevent a mech from overheating you simply shouldn't be allowed to fire a weapon group which would put you over the heat limit. If one is willing to shoot and take structural damage would be a choice then. Override warning should not be that nasty but rather and indicator on a HUD. Default state of override should be set in options; this way one never forget to override at the start of a match.

As an option? Even by weapon group? Sure.
As a default.. eh. "Off" should be the default for the option. If you think it's worth the tradeoff to overheat to get that *last* shot in, you should be able to.

That said, I don't think *I* would use it - to me, heat management is one of the core parts of Battletech, whether it's the board game, some of the novels, Mechcommander, the more recent Btech game, or any of the MW games.

Existing override I want always on. Worst thing can happen is to shut down in front of enemies; even if you are cooking yourself you still can run to cover and roll armor..Proposed override I would keep on most of the cases and as default state, especially on very hot mechs.

No, your mech doesn't need to hold your hand like this. The current mechanic that rewards being aware of your heat and situation and punishes tunneling in on just killing the guy in front of you is much better game play and further reinforces an alteration to the standard fps mindset earlier than just about any other aspect but theTTK.

Outside of that it becomes a buff to laser vomit and other high alpha builds removing the risk of killing yourself or shutting down by mistake. It also would be a heavy nerf to flamers by removing the initial surprise shutdown or general overheat caused by pilots not realising their heart has been greatly inflated by the enemy
