Any official answer to why this happened? MM rules? Or bug?

No actually MM, just matching up teams which are 2-man to 12-man (no 11-man though). As others said, it is a numbers game, population and team sizes. And the larger the team the lesser average mech weight that is available.

Yeah, I’ve thought of this idea before as a fix for group queue, which is honestly broken for small groups at the moment. Have an option for people to join Group Queue solo, and give them a small bonus for doing so (20% cbills maybe).
I don’t know if the Match Maker can handle it, but having it as a check box next to the Quick Play button (like the servers list) would be good - essentially drop in Quick Play, but if you ticked the box, the MM can grab you over to fill out odd sized teams as well when needed.
The big issue now is that as group queue gets quieter, small groups have much longer waits to get games until they quit group queue and just sync drop. Then you have groups in the solo queue, and the group queue loses more players, meaning longer games for those who are left. It’s in a bit of a spiral at the moment, and the only advice now for frustrated small groups is “don’t play the group queue outside of American Prime Time”. And that sucks for people who want to be able to play with friends.

This has been suggested like a million times, many times by players who would opt in.
It makes sense, but chances PGI listening to this are kind of low.
That said, Chris (or Russ/Paul?) was saying once FP stuff is done they'd listen to what should be done next.
So once we have May maybe you can propose it again, if the player numbers hold together until PGI does something that is.

Only real hope is around the time it gets really bad mw5 will come out. This might bring the pop back for a short term.
Shrugs, for old players nothing has changed really in that time, except balance, that's probably why they left/leaving.
And when it comes to new players MWO does have the same problem like it always had.
I guess PGI could do a cross promotion, buy MW5 get some kind of mech(like the free Hero mechs PGI gave out this year and last year) in MWO or something, to entice new players

...these curves are truly dire. I had no idea the situation is this bad.
I've stopped playing, and PGI has stopped developing (or at least that's the feel from waiting for MechCon and getting nothing for MWO)
And I have spent about 1500 to 1600$ on my account and another 400 for friends and new players.
I'm not bitter, I've had my fun, but I also have no reason to continue to play (not to mention paying, actually gotten as much of a refund as I could after MechCon)
Those FP changes are disappointing, taking something like 8 months (having as much depth as adding more drop decks or increasing conquest tickets from 1250 to 1500 or so) and at this point they will bring no players into the mode.
And its also a mode that has been less then successful anyway, clogging up dev time for MWO as a whole.
But then I don't think PGI has any idea where to go with MWO next, at least not until resources are free from MW5, and who knows how many players are left by then.
Game does feel like in a state of neglect and I think players are noticing.
Last point on this, from my time in Isengrim, MS (and after PGI decided big groups are the bogyman), drifting with other groups I've picked up a rather large friend list, all grey now.

I still maintain that without social tools - global chat, private chat, etc. - in every facet of the game, this will continue to be a problem. I'm not talking about getting "into" a chat mode. I'm talking about chat in the mechbay, loadout, skills, in match, etc. Persistent chat for units and groups with the ability to private chat someone regardless of whether you are in a match or not.
The tools in this game are so poor that you can't even attach a note to a friend request. A massively single player arena game with a team orientation is the very definition of split personality.

Allow smaller matches.
What's the big deal if you end up playing the odd 4v4 or 8v8 if you can get games instantly
