I just played through a match in a trial Hellbringer, and I skipped past the reward screen and didn't notice the XP. However, when I was back in the main screen, I saw that there was 0 XP.
Did I earn any XP from that match? Did it maybe go into my pool of GXP?

No, you didn't. Neither XP nor GXP are gained by using trial mechs.

When you have found a Mech that you enjoy playing, the suggestion is usually to try and get your own Mech fairly quickly. If you do the Tutorial and do the race course often enough to get the top reward, you should get some nice starting capital. Enough to buy a decent Mech, because there are currently a number of them for sale.
I am personally highly partial to the Crab 27, as well as the Roughneck 2A. Both of them are fairly sturdy Mechs that work well in teaching the basic concepts of this game.

When I started you got XP and GXP. That was awesome.
I started playing a lot of trial mechs (Faction etc) and ended up buying a number of them I had XP on.
PGI makes these suck azz changes at times.
Last year when you sold a Mech you got 50% of its cost. Now it is like 25%. I'd buy mechs at a 40% discount and I could always sell it back.
A lot of players will tell you to never sell a mech, to instead spend real money to buy another mech bay. Look at your mechs or even your stats. I bet there are some that you never play.
Some Mechs are simply worth less than 150MC or 300MC for a mech bay.

I used to say Stormcrow for the 1st mech because you could also do scouting. But it has been nerfed and the Hellbringer is a great mech to start with.

It depends on the mech. The bare-bones chassis prices have not changed as far as I know. But if you have double heatsinks, FF armor, etc, none of that is returned. On omnimechs, if you keep the omnipods, you wouldn't get much either since that's a good chunk of the chassis price.
