Is there a setting or a command that you can set that will un-render the cockpit view?

Several mechs have a limited view that the cockpit seems to block a lot of the view.

I've tried 3rd person view but it does not offer the mini map, plus I seem to have a targeting "jump" when I put my crosshairs on target.

When I test mechs, I'll move the cross hairs over the target but as I get closer, the crosshairs will jump or snap. Fyi I do not have auto aim software. The only 3rd party software I use is fire control.

Some cockpits just offer less view. Think of it as part of their design. A lot of people felt the Piranha's cockpit was especially restrictive. Just how it goes.

3rd Person was intentionally designed not to have a huge advantage over 1st person. Since the majority of the playerbase didn't want it to begin with. People still get salty about it lol.

Your target jump is "instant" convergence.
When it jumps from something far away to something close, that's the convergence point shifting from say "converge at 500 meters" and "converge at 230 meters".

This happens in first person as well. You just can't see it because you're looking head-on rather than at an angle.

Reticle is drawn from the cockpit position on the mech in third person.
+ <--convergence point (reticle)

[ ] <--Source of the convergence line (cockpit)

In first person, it is drawn from the camera position.
[+] <--convergence point and source of the convergence line. (the line can't be seen because it goes right to the center of the camera).

In 3rd person, it jumps because it was poorly implemented and rushed. No one wanted it. It seems IGP, the publisher at the time, demanded 3rd person. They've never bothered to improve it. The reason it jumps is because the aim tracing is from the cockpit, but you are outside the cockpit, so if something is covering your line of sight from the cockpit, it jumps to that small hill in front of you.

As far as optimizing your view, go into testing grounds and then hit Esc then select Settings from the menu on the bottom-left. In the top box of options there is a Field Of View (FOV) slider adjustment at the bottom.

Try widening (or narrowing) the cockpit field of view with the slider and return to the 'mech in Testing Grounds to see what it looks like until you have something that suits you.

Be aware that the "best" adjustment may vary from chassis to chassis. It also may affect FPS, so you might want to use the F9 "Show FPS" keyboard command when trying it out the first time. It should only be an issue if your hardware is struggling.

If your hardware is struggling check the "Workarounds" forum subsection. There are some tips and a few tweaks to help with reducing hardware load in MWO. (I'm a proud? member of the 'Under 25 FPS Club' Posted Image )
