The less you think about the game in Quick Play, the better. There's too many reasons to have an aneurysm when you start to inspect what people are saying and doing. Mute VOIP, keep it simple and leave the game once you're dead.

With all due respect, that is a bit of stupid advice. Even just calling out the targets as to which should be the priority, can affect how the game is played as a team. I've seen this way too often, especially now that I'm piloting the Kraken. Some clear suggestions and helpful recommendations, like, "Stay in cover and be patient" works well for the whole team instead of, "Charge!!!11!!1!uno!" or just keeping quiet.

Target spotted, need assistance, thank you.

Don't need VOIP, don't need chat, and it marks them on the radar. Doing more than that in QP is a waste of time and breath; the more complex your strategy is, the less likely your average pubbie is to follow it. If you want to punish yourself herding toddlers you are free to try, but I have played enough and seen how things go.

Ok, you do you, I'll do me. My way is actually helping me now as opposed to blaming it on bad communication and saying the team did badly.

Mine starts with cuddling my tea cup and staring at the map/mode vote screen terrified I have to play yet another round of Team Deathmatch (Skirmish) instead of something more interesting.

Then comes dealing with the sadness that it is once again HPG Manifold + Team Deathmatch (Skirmish) and wandering off to get refill for the tea while waiting next minute for the last person to finally connect so we can all go to the slaughtering grounds.

While dropping I ensure I did not bring any consumables (and make mental note to remove them after the game if I had some still in for some reason) and then off we go... find the team's assault mechs and make sure they get wherever they wanna go without being picked apart by some random light mechs because Team Deathmatch spawns are still as silly as ever.
Also ignore the person who shot me in the back because they alt-tabbed back in the game and used LMB.

Proceed game play with yet another jump jet equipped light or medium mech standing on top of the wall looking statuesque while the rest of their team gets butchered nascaring on the low ground.

Also I do not have Override Shutdown bound at all, as I firmly believe it should not exist in the game to begin with, as it's yet another tool to ignore the heat mechanic.

Nope, always keep VOIP on. I don't talk a lot, but this is me at least once a night: "Hey Atlas, turn around, you got a Piranha trying to creep on you." Your type of communication doesn't get the point across quickly enough to the right people.

Exactly that ^

There have been so many times where I'd tell some of the assault pilots in the team to let us know if they decide to push forward and more often than not, they DO reply back, either by typing or through voip. Then, we just roll the enemy.

Well, I tend to have voice on. I say hello, maybe some small talk, then I just announce what I do.

I use the command wheel to highlight what I am shooting at, and most of the times announce it on voice. "Pushing Marauder, target Echo". I warn of Lights sneaking in, if I see them, but I am usually ignored. If I am off to flank, I announce it and ask for backup. If I notice Nascar, I mention it on voice to give the Assaults a chance to haul ***.

I also pay attention to the calls of other people and try to shoot what they shoot.

I bring consumables and have auto-renew on those that I use.

I do not use override. I just bring relatively cold builds.

I do not read chat during the game, because I do not have the time to do that, in most games. People not being on voice has caused a number of problems in the past, in my matches. I played with a streamer who had voice turned off. I announced that I was doing a push because I still had good armour and was looking for support. He moved ahead, in what looked like giving me the space to push through. Then he tried to get back. Because he had not heard me. I blocked him. I kinda yelled at him to get out of the way. ;) We managed to get ourselves sorted and then he texted in all caps to stop blocking him. Which I did not see. ;) Because I was busy doing my push, which worked quite fine.

Only noticed when I went to twitch to check out the match from his perspective, hours later. So not saying anything is absolutely fine IMO, but please, leave the sound on.

Most of the negativity I see in the game is directly after the match. Some variations of "Noob Team, FFS!" and an instant disconnect. Or people complaining about being told "GG". "THIS WAS NOT A GOOD MATCH! WE SUCKED! YOU ARE MOCKING ME!!!"

While I do understand the frustration, I also understand the reason to leave voice chat off for Twitch streamers and anyone who makes videos for Youtube etc.

As someone who records all my games as possible youtube material later on, I do not want to deal with all the possible problems when someone watches my video, realizes they can hear their voice on it (especially if they are saying something rude and I miss it while making the video) and starts coming after me with everything from 'slander' charges to all the other possibilities.

And asking people at the start of every game if it's alright that I record them talking just isn't feasible.

But I agree for anyone not recording games, or streaming on twitch/youtube, there really isn't much a reason to not have voice on.

I usually dont die irl when I die in game, if that is what you mean. Just a little on the inside, everytime i watch other people play the game.... And everytime I return after a years break to see that PGI has ****** up things even more than before...............

Regarding voice chat: I instantly mute everyone that says something irrelevant at the beginning of the game. Not once has any of these people said anything relevant in all my over 5k matches. Relevant information is short, directed and, at the given time, necessary to coordinate and win the game. I don't give a damn how peoples day was. That is something you can share in teamspeak with your friends not strangers on the internet.

The beauty of a single player game disguised as a team game.... Whether you paint yourself blue, set yourself on fire, screaming expletives at your team mates and then, advance at full speed ahead, directly into the largest enemy concentration and die, with 38 in damage you have to ask yourself: was it fun?

It seems, after 2 years involved with this small niche market game, that's where we are. It really has gotten worse as PGI nerf'd the crap out of everything to slow it down for the failed and abandoned Solaris adventure........ Now, we are even less than the "Rock-and-Sock'em-Robots game from the 1960's using technologies from that era....

OP: how involved? Events only: then, off to other games that make some sense.......it's a lot healthier that way.....!

A man of taste.

I would put in more effort if there was a reason to, but the Tier system is complete bunk and there's no reward for actually getting into Top 1,000, Top 100, top 50, Top 10 and so on. No one cares; there's no pat on the back, no daily login reward, and no matter how good you get a 99.94% player is still going to be paired with 90%ers, 50%ers and 15%ers all on the same team. It is beyond demoralizing to have to deal with this kind of quality disparity in matches no matter how good or bad you are.

Welcome to the Anti-Meritocracy !!!! It's just not "value added"......... The metric that retains anyone that is left is "what level of fun are we having?" I have friends that are mech collectors and but "everything" and have not played the game in 2 years ! Several other friends have multiple accounts and at most play, the xmas events.
