Been Away For A Few Years, Where To Begin?

I spent the last four years stranded in the middle of rural Nowhere without high-speed internet and now that I've made it back to civilization, I'd like to get back into MWO. I'm assuming a few things may have changed while I was gone and I probably can't just jump into my old gaussapult from the open beta and go to town. First thing I noticed is that all of my consumables, modules, nodes, and masteries appear to be missing, but I've got a chunk of GSP that I'm not sure what to do with. What is the recommended training material for getting back up to speed on this game?

Well gausspult probably still does okay, though its been overshadowed by newer releases. Consumables are still a thing, Player vs Red Smoke and all that jazz. Other than that, game has been in a steady decline down to the point that the playerbase is a shallow pool, mechs likely move more sluggish than you remember but you can get the Light Engines now for IS which are a nice balance between weight saving and fragility with out going full XL. Uh stealth mechs are a thing, MASC is in the game.....
Two modes came and went - Faction Play which is largely dead save for some die hard types and premades, Solaris 7 1-2 vs 1-2 is pretty dead too but you only need a tiny group to play in that one anyways.
Other than finding out all the crap the hard way, there is putting your GXP/historical XP into your mechs new fangled skill trees. Lot of people have their own preference for these (for me all the reduced chance to be crit nodes in survival are a must, also strongly favor mobility and sensor tree for seismic).

Start with a heavy or forgiving (faster) assault as you ease back in.
Gauss charges up now.
There's 3 types of Gauss if you're IS (Light, reg and heavy).
More weapons are in.
Rockets have a minimum range as do ATMs... so be aware of that.
Some additional maps, probably won't recognize some of the older maps, hope you got to enjoy Terra Therma 'cause I've only seen it a few times in the past two years due to voting.

First thing let me say:
DO NOT USE YOUR GSP YET!
Go ahead and use your HSP from any mechs to learn the skill tree, but don't do like I did and go throw all your GSP at mechs without understanding what you're doing.
I regret a few skill point decisions and could have used those GSP for much better things if I'd only been patient.
Edit: Grinding skills is now not only tedious but EXPENSIVE. Each skill point is 45k, which doesn't sound like much but you're looking at over 4 million CB to "Master" a mech now.

in your profile on the MWOmercs.com profile tab. (up above) you can see how they converted all the old things to the new system. I had all the skills opened under the old system and many modules. So if they gave me c-bills and experiance I could have skilled every mech a few times over.
across from General XP there is a tab to hit called
[View Skill Tree Refund Ledger]
This is explain a bit.
But use the HSP (historic skill points) first, and if you have more than one mech in that exact model, do not conver the old historic GXP to one mech. I have some with one variant with three different builds on the 3 of that mech that I have.
The funny part is I still have not reskilled every single mech of mine yet and sometimes take totally unskilled mechs out with, lets just say interesting builds that should never see the light of day. Some times they work.

4 years? Well, a lot has changed.
Quick Play is 12 v 12 now. There's a basic tutorial (check it out for cbill rewards), there's achievements, but they're not very exciting honestly, skill tree was completely revamped as you saw, there's the Incursion gamemode but it doesn't get voted very often, there's map and gamemode voting instead of random maps and player specified modes, there's also Dominion (King of the radar dish), there was an Escort mode but it's been removed from rotation this past patch, the game is available via Steam, there's a LOT more mechs, modules came and went, matchmaker isn't doing ELO anymore, there are 5 tiers but it's not a bell curve so you'll eventually get to tier 1 or 2 just playing because it's weighed to increase, match score is in the game and the primary way of evaluating how well you did (other than kills, damage, and assists, which is also factored into it), you no longer need 3 variants of a chassis to level up a mech,...
OH and you get 2 free Hero mechs if you play one match on the 27th (50 min match score, which is a pretty low threshold).

I recently came back myself and didn't look for this information. I found out the hard way that I had a whole 91 sp in historic sp and had spent some money on sp on my old blackjack...but on the rest of my old mechs it worked out fine getting all my historic sp. Also asside from historic skill points there was also historic xp that I could convert to normal xp on mech so I did that too. Don't know if the historic xp is linked to historic skill points but anyhoo be aware of that too.

I HAVE a lot of the oem builds still from beta days... you can still do the k2 guassapult
The dd jeger
the Dc atlas
a lot of the old builds are still fun.. and when you show up in a classic build and kill these new fangle things its fun..
the xp change made old heads like me.. go from living comfy to strait up filthy rich
Ive got a half a million gxp, at one point i have 1.2million gxp
then they made some new xp, then they gave use back all sorts of stuff..
that was so long ago i dont remember it clearly Only bits and pieces stick out
the hit boxs, the lrmagodon

Catapult K2 is still a favorite but other mechs do the Duel Gauss a little better now. I would Suggest looking into 1X Heavy Guass, 4X Med Laser or 2X Light Gauss, 4X Med Laser builds. You still have good firepower but can invest in a heavy engine for a little more speed (Nascar= running around in circles is common in most quick play drops, slow mechs get singled out very easily)
Yeah, skill points are the new grind economy though we no longer have a rule of 3 so the cost of mastering a mech almost equals out (I no longer need to master 2 mechs I hate to master one I like) Converting XP into SP cost a good amount of C-Bills so take it a few skill points at a time until you know what you need to invest in (Allot invest in Consumables, I usually skip in entirely... then get crit by a skill boosted arty strike)
Also, engine rating no longer effects torso twist or maneuverability (see: engine desync) Size of your engine only effects your speed, everything else is determined by your mechs stats and skill points.
