it's not a strange thing. the only pay wall is "buy the game" it makes sure the people they are able to more easily get feedback from are not only going to be the ones in the CB but the ones with a more direct interest in the game

WOW! LOL so to measure ones direct interest in the game is that you need to pre-order to prove that you have interest in the game?

Per the FAQ:

Quote

6.) WILL THE OFFICIAL MECHWARRIOR 5: MERCENARIES DISCORD EVENTUALLY BE PUBLIC ACCESS?

At this time the official MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries Discord server is currently exclusive to Community Edition owners only. The server may open to the general public or through invite at a later date.

The server isn't to build interest in the game, it's for players who actually boughtthe game to have questions answer and serves as an incentive to encourage people to preorder. I'm sure there will still be plenty of ways to get information about the game the the traditional channels, you just won't get the priority access the preorders will. Complaining about it just makes sound entitled.

As a comparison point, have you seen the cost of Star Citizen's special high tier access like this? https://starcitizen.tools/Concierge

that would be why I said direct interest people who have already volunteered money towards it. If each tier got you more and more access then I could see your point. But as it stands PGI has got one of the best and most pro consumer preorder promotion I have ever seen. Even if the game fails to live up to your expectation you still get more than your monies worth in MWO items.

they can't have the discord open to everyone. thousands of people spamming channels would make it unusable as a rescores for feedback. So this is the best way to limit the number and make sure the majority who get in will be supportive and not just trolls

your sentence in bold just defines what "Paywall" is

So PGI is going in the path of Sperg Citizen, just reminds me PGI tried to copy it and failed miserably.

Yes, it's paywalled. I never disputed the fact. It doesn't change my points though. PGI is a company, they need to make money, I'd rather they paywall a discord server than game features. Besides, having a paywall can have it's benefits.

You're acting entitled, you think you deserve something because you want it and when you can't have it you complain about it. Sorry, you don't get my sympathy.

Good thing at my stately age I have disposable income.
But seriously youngsters companies require money to run.
That's how it's worked since the Industrial Age.
And it ain't gonna change.

I don't really care about AMAs or Discord channels as pre-order bonuses, but I gotta say: It amazes me that people whiteknight that sorta stuff.

and yet somehow companies used to get by by selling you completed quality games, not bug filled glorified betas that need constant injections of money every year in order maintain a minimally viable product

Seems few and far between anymore...in fact I think I have to go back to MW3 or MW4 for the last complete game that I bought and played in single user mode without having to get updates. I think the internet changed all that when companies realized they could push any fixes through internet updates, so they could rush the product and worry about the finishing touches later.

That's a pretty weird definition of "complete game", considering Mercenaries, Vengeance and Black Knight, but okay...

You can get Discord access with the $50 pre-order. That's not whale money. That's probably what they'll charge for the game at launch

And you get considerably more than $50 worth of MWO stuff with it.

It's not like games shipped completely bug-free before the internet, and back then the only way to fix a bug is to issue a new disc or cartridge. Plenty of games had bugs fixed in re-issues. Just look at a speedrun for any game and you'll see all the bugs speedrunners exploit to reduce their times.

And games were much, much simpler back then. Modern games are orders of magnitude more complex than those of the pre-internet era. More complexity means more places to screw up, and more ground for QA to cover.
