There are some designs where I prefer other artists like David White (Black Knight) or Shimmering Sword (almost everything), though.

I just hope that WHEN the do the Stone Rhino the try to keep it as close as possible to the original art as they can... such a sexy mech.
Seen some concept art that makes it look like a shoe horn...

It pisses over the whole design concept of the marauder.
It is supposed to be a sleek design from the frontal aspect, what we get is a fat mech with a baboons ***. Arms are very short as well.
Shimmerings version is better.

So you're a yougin' who wasn't there when this original art was made and had the original miniatures?
Seriously it's art so subjective.
People swear Kanye West is good and I'm not seeing it in the slightest. Art.

Both look way better than the original, the original look super cartoonish and with a futuristic alien style that doesn't fit the inner sphere feel at all.
I also prefer to have art that is actually made directly for the Battletech IP over art scavenged from Macross etc.

It's insectoid design made it one of the most beloved and sought out designs in the franchise.

Spindly limbs on huge armored beasts were always a part of Battletech that was ruining the immersion for me. MWO mech looks overhaul is the best thing that happened to BT designs for decades.
PS: And yes, I was watching macross on my black and white TV and was a fan back then.

While the anime design is a bit screwy when used in MWO (the idea of a cannon on top of the mech wouldn't function well here) or in BT, the anime design had a reason; the pilot occupied 90% of the torso and was a GIANT. So where else would the gun go? It did need a little bit better designing, however, like how is ammo fed to it?
As such, using this art had its problems particularly in suspension of disbelief.

Though it is worth noting, the Marauder in the anime...didn't use bullets. As such it didn't need a way to feed the gun.
The advantage of using the artwork however, was pretty clear. Unlike most torso mounted weapon systems, the Marauder had a turret. This helped make the mech unique and a little more fun than many mechs in BT. It had a little more, it had an edge, it was also 75 tons which was among the most formidable and useful weights in the series. The AC/2 or AC/5 could fire forward, left, right, behind, basically in almost any direction. The original rule was updated a bit, an AC/2 in the CT could fire in any direction but could not go from back left to back right or vice versa without swinging all the way around first (probably to add a semblance of realism to the awfully narrow feed?), the AC/5 was limited a bit more to what is now considered current shoulder turret rules (in which if mounted on the right it can aim forward to back and any direction to the right but can't aim left).
Its sort of up and down these days, of course, it depends on whom the GM is and what they'd allow.
Out of the Marauder designs, I prefer the Marauder II's art from Alex.
Sorry but it being on top has a number of advantages, such as hill peeking. Granted this is meaningless in MWO due to the fact that the cockpit is too low, but in terms of tabletop one could climb a hill, get Hull Down (lay forward) and just have the turret peeking over. Bam, one hidden unit able to perform a sniping ambush as the first blow.

I suppose it makes the 'mech more viable for gameplay, though.

The "original" does not belong to BattleTech. Most of the "original" BattleTech art is just repurposed from other, better sources.

Agreed but it was the original for BattleTech Marauder.
