Returning to the game, any recommendations or resources to get back up to speed? Any recommended places looking to recruit pilots? Cleaning the slate and ready to start fresh.

You have a lot of catching up to do.
I'm afraid I won't put in the effort to provide links and I'll leave it to others to provide their best resources. They might have a better idea than I. I'll instead provide you a list of topics.

On this main site, click the Game button. A lot of the introductory/manual stuff has been moved to the MWO Wiki. That would be the official content.

Here's the list (in no particular order):
1. Skill tree (completed redesigned)
Good news-no need to own 3 variants of a chassis to max skills!
Lots of people don't like it, but I do.
2. "Ghost heat" or as PGI calls it, Heat Penalties.
3. Quick play game modes: Assault, Skirmish, Conquest, Incursion, Dominion, and Escort (disabled at this time).
Assault is from Beta-cap enemy base or kill all enemies
Skirmish is straight-up kill all enemies
Conquest was in Beta depending on when you played--Cap resources
Incursion-Destroy enemy base-this mode has more going on so read up on it
Dominion-King of the Hill, er, Radar dish
4. Clans and how Clan mechs work (omnipods)
5. Faction Play (mostly dead but some are trying for a revival)
6. Solaris (mostly dead on arrival)
7. Mech hitboxes: https://mwomercs.com...x-localization/
8. UI has changed dramatically since Beta and a lot of behind the scenes things work smoothly like sales and content injections.
Previously, PGI had to take the servers offline to make any changes. This is no longer necessary!
9. Events have improved and more free stuff is given out
10. There is a chat in the mechlab. There is integrated VoIP in-match (your team only). You can mute players if you wish.
11. You can report players in-match from the score screen
12. The timeline is in the 3060s now and we got some new weapons from both the introduction of Clans and the Civil War era.
Stealth armor
Light Fusion Engines (IS)
RACs
More Ultra-AC sizes (IS)
MRMs
Rocket Launchers (1-time use weapon!)
And more.

Oh, in the game, on the Home tab, definitely go through the Academy tutorial. It's not expansive, but you'll grab some cbills doing it and it covers some basics.

I'm in the same boat as you Godhammer. I too am just back from beta. Unfortunately, it appears the game is on a bit of a decline. A number of the units that were big are all but deserted. Happy to work with you if you are online when I am. If you find a descent unit, please let me know.

Its hit a MAJOR decline over the last year or so.
Player pop is small, but appears stable. IIRC it is about 30k.
Daily unique logins via steam* average circa 1k players.

In practice, solo queue is going to be your best bet.

The game has returned to its "pre-steam release" population, where getting group queue matches can be pretty tough depending on the time of day. A lot of times if you are getting group matches, it will be against the same people over and over again.

Faction play seems all but dead unless there is a related event going on.

Solaris 7 has been all but dead since a couple months after launch. (more dead buckets)

*steam is not the sole launcher for MWO, but it is more than likely how the vast majority of players launch MWO.
