So I got twitch downloaded for the mods and such, but was wondering (since i dont have a camera) what are some good options for recording gameplay for uploading purposes. Is FRAPS still a thing?

For recording I use NVidia Shadowplay, with Razer Cortex as my backup in case the former derps out after a driver update. Latter is free and, despite being Razer, you don't actually need to own any Razer products too use it.

For Twitch streamers, those I follow mostly use OBS.

Fraps is a thing, but its hideously inefficient , has very few settings, and you have to pay for it. I use my paid copy from time to time, but only for short clips because it's convenient and I'm too lazy to remember nVidia's controls.

If you just want to upload to youtube, both nVidia (Shadowplay) and AMD (ReLive) have recording software for their respective video cards, which should require little effort to use. Shadowplay isn't too bad. OBS is a free recording and streaming software package that has loads of options and settings to support what you want to do, you just may have to put some time into figuring out those settings.

ReLive.. I'll have to check that out. Mostly just gonna upload them to my channel. Gonna get a "cheep" external HD to store the files and upload.

I use bandi cam. Easy to use presets and just one button to turn recording on or off. It's pretty cheap too so for the super lazy who just want to record and upload it works great.

In my opinion Fraps is vastly inferior to the already mentioned alternatives these days.
Last update was in 2013 so it's basically dead since 6 years. Don't waste your money on this.

If you have an intel CPU you can activate Quick Sync which uses intel's integrated gpu for encoding. I utilized this with OBS and was able to record MWO in (mostly) smooth 1080p on a 5 year old rig.

Shadowplay doesn't covert well in YouTube so if you like to upload videos there use other programs.

I use OBS even with VBR set to 2 pass and 70k Bit Rate, the videos come out great but when I upload them to You Tube after cutting them in Premier Pro, they degrade. Damn you tube and its reduction is horrid.

OK question, I am new to OBS. I used to use Shadowplay and I loved it but it started to pixelate the heck out of my damn replays and now I hate it, lost my 1600+ damage match in my flea because of it, so I tossed it aside and got OBS.

Not as familiar with it, however even with the settings above when I up it to YT it still comes out less than 1080. Any ideas that can help me?

Can you link one of your uploaded videos?

Specifically during fights, just gets degraded.

That video (haven't check the rest), is running at 1080p for me, and there's a noticeable improvement when you switch back and forth between 1080p and 720p. I'm not really seeing any degradation during fights either.

But my eyes are **** so maybe I'm missing something.

When I re-watch them, when the motion really starts and heavy fights ensue, it seems like it degrades and starts to blur and does not keep the 1080 like when your sitting still. Wonder if its just on my end.

Best guess is that your game dropped frames during combat, and the process of smoothing the entire video out to 60 (Either by OBS or youtube) caused some blurring.

I dunno, I don't do a lot of recording/uploading and I've gotten used to MWO's unstable framerate so maybe that's why I'm not seeing it.

EDIT: Slowed the video down to 0.25 play back speed during a fighting sequence and it does seem there are some dropped/repeated frames. Someone better at this sort of thing should be able to make a solid call on this.

If you're uploading video to YouTube, please learn about and use compression software.

I use Adobe Premiere Pro and Media Encoder to refine the vids and then upload to you Tube
