they would never be permitted under the geneva convention. that doesn't mean they wont get used, but you better win that war otherwise you will face the war crimes tribunal.

thing people dont realize is that to get a laser to burn through anything pretty much requires a beam that can blind you with secondary reflections alone, to cut through a few tons of armor requires significantly more power. sure you can issue your troops safety goggles, but the potential for collateral damage is too high. use as an anti-missile system is probably ok as the beam will be pointed away from face.

dunno, with the energy they consume I have my doubts until we would find some easy portable high energy solutions
