Honest question:
Is it such a foreign concept to like something despite being aware of its shortcomings? I'd assume most of us to be adults here who are able of at least that much critical thinking, no?
I also like The Expandables movies for what they are, but I'll be the first to admit the they're utterly brain-dead flicks that solely hinge on one's nostalgia, filled with cheesy writing, mediocre acting as threadbare plot.

Of course, you can like whatever you like. I like the movie Robot Jox, and I doubt anyone is going to put it into the same category as Citizen Kane .
I think some have been let down by the Jihad/Dark Ages era (I myself haven't had experience in those eras so I can't really comment on their quality). Regardless of that, I could see other people liking it. It depends on a person's experiences with the franchise.
That being said, just as it is ok to like content that is less than well received, it is also ok to dislike it as well. I like Terminator 1 and 2, however as much as I like those movies and the universe as a whole, I am not going to bat for anything after T2 .
Anyway...For all it's short comings though, BattleTech can fair pretty well when it comes to Science Fiction. It has things that may not hold up today or may date it a bit, but it always seems to deliver an intriguing overall story.
P.S. I like the Expendables movies too
