Does anybody actually know how the matchmaker sorts lances?

I used to think it was tonnage but keep seeing outliers where heavies are in alpha while mediums are in bravo... this creates an awkward situation where a heavy is left alone while the lights go to "flank"...

Worst I've seen today was on Canyon. We had a Whammy going about 50kph in alpha lance while bravo was a MDD, EBJ, HBR and my Cicada. As you can guess his lancemates (Flea,Osiris, Nova) abandoned him and we met up with our assaults before he was half-way across the map. And no, he didn't last long once the enemy found him.

As a tweak, can I propose the following: Sort it by speed!

The general trend will still be Light->Heavy only lance mates won't abandon each other so readily as they'll be able to move in formation at speeds closer to each other.

You can't apply logic here. It will ruin the game.

Heavy in Alpha? Pfft, I had a matchmaker derp where my Kraken ended up the lone assault among lights in Alpha. Bravo had a Dire and Annihilator. The only assault in Charlie was a Warhawk.

Only had it happen once, but it was a memorable once.

Assuming you're referring to an actual quick play solo queue match, If your team has X in a lance, so does the enemy. Teams are matches by weight CLASSES, not by actual tonnage.

Group queue and Faction Warfare lack a matchmaker altogether. Group is by tonnage of each group (that's why multiple groups of 2 sync dropped together to form the required 12 players can have an advantage in tonnage over a pair of groups of six. Faction has variable drop deck tonnages, currently 160 to 255 for clan and 265 for IS. Not everyone uses every ton available in their deck. Usually people only bring fully mastered and equipped mechs to faction so there may be times based on what they own or don't own, where they're under the tonnage limit.
