Today a played in a match where we won 12-4. I was on the winning team and typed in GG at the end of the match. An angry red player told me I was a bad winner and that gg was an insult. When I replied that gg is a polite way to say you gave it your best he said that's what the salute means.

GG = Good Game, commonly used at the end of sporting events by both teams to show respect for the other.

07 = Salute. It's left handed from the viewers perspective but people say its meant from their perspective from behind.

<o = Salute. It's right handed from the viewers perspective.

GG Close = Insult from a winning player in a lopsided win. i.e. 12-1 and a winning player says ggclose at the end of the match. This is an insult or taunt.

Those are my definitions, what are yours?

Edited to add my summation below:

In looking at the huge variety of responses below I find that many people have no idea about sportsmanship good or bad. The huge number of people who read but didn't comment meant to me that they understood and agreed with my definitions. In the USA we are taught from a young age that good sportsmanship is important. If you are playing on the NA server expect the majority of players to be from the USA and adapt to their customs. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. When you win you should be respectful to the losing team. When you lose you should be respectful to the winning team. That is what good sportsmanship is about. If you choose to be a bad sport then that's on you and is a reflection of the quality of your character.

Lining up after the game and shaking the hand of every member of the other team while saying Good Game is still practiced in the NHL, NFL, and NBA. I don't know why the MLB doesn't do it. I also don't watch soccer so I don't know if they do it.

I have never used GG in a sarcastic way. It is difficult to pick up sarcasm in the written word. So why would anyone just automatically assume sarcasm?

If you get a GG or gg from me it means I had a good time playing with you win or lose. It's a sign of respect. If you get a ggclose from me it means I'm being a bad winner and have probably had a few too many. Feel free to call me out or insult me at that point

it depends on game and context to me, if it was a absolute curb stomp then GG means little to nothing, if it was a close game and actually a good game, then yeah it has meaning, i think far too many people throw it out as an empty platitude.

What most players consider a "stomp" is really par for the course in Yolo multiplayer games.

Whenever someone types o7 i type o8, its a numbers game to me

As for gg, its far too overused. If its said by a winning team before losing team then its rude just going off of how competitive matches in starcraft go.

Could be a meaningless habit, like how they make you 'shake' hands in youth sports. Kids line up and give the obligatory "good game" x100 fast so they can run to the bench and get snacks.

If the match ends in a 12-3 or worse, I'll always throw in a "gg close m8s o7" or something like it at the end. If I'm on the winning team, I might also add "ez" or "thx 4 killz" as well.

It's great, because it always gets the bleeding hearts a little riled up.

This is the moden day world, you will offended most people by doing nothing. Just by saying good morning they could think you are being a smart bum.

Ignore them or send them xoxo and then they will call you gay. Its a great world we live in atm. Stay strong o/ The Bruno

I'll usually treat anything that isn't overtly sarcastic (ex: gg close) as genuine. People who get worked up about perceived slights over "gg" are dumb.

If it's a stomp in your team's favour, I think it's safest to not say anything in all chat.

I might say "gg close" in TEAM CHAT (and I double-check that it's not all chat) as a light-hearted acknowledgement of a job well done.

I always thought <o is meant to be an ice cream cone.

If you're saying GoodGame you're acknowledging you had enjoyed the game and it can be said regardless of the outcome, even if it's a 48-4 pug stomp. If you didn't you should at least say ThanksForTheMatch.

That being said there is an etiquette to GGing.

If you won and you're the first to comment on the match:
TFTM - saying GG is basically saying "I had a good time beating you" and disregards the opponents feelings about the match be they positive or negative. TFTM is neutral.

If you lost and you're the first to comment on the match:
Feel free to say GG - Even though you lost you can still say if you enjoyed the match. If you didn't enjoy it, at least TFTM or acknowledge their win, it shows sportsmanship.

If you won and you're the second to comment on the match:
If they say GG feel free to GG back, if not TFTM is appropriate. If your opponent hasn't acknowledged enjoying the match it's just rude to admit you enjoyed their failure.

If you lost and you're the second to comment on the match:
It's your choice, if you enjoyed the game you can GG, if you didn't TFTM is appropriate.

If your opponent is a snow flake who likes to rage and whine:
Feel free to tell them to GitGud.

If you're a snowflake who doesn't care about your opponents feelings:
Feel free to tell them you GotGonorrhea.

...the thread that'll never die. I never type gg unless it was, in fact, a good, close game. I get salty sometimes and ask the perp, "was it?" or "how so?" when it clearly was a stomp and someone types it. Nobody wants to see that juvenile sh*t when they get stomped.
"Oh it's just like shaking hands, like at a t ball game when we were little..." Whatever dude, yeah it's just a game, but we're adults now. How bout a salute instead of a lie.

Always depends what side you are on for how it will be interpreted.

I GG if it was indeed close, like down to the last couple of mechs.

Salutes are for respect/fear of another player

o/ waves are for hellos to recognized players.

GG close is for sarcasm or jerks, context especially important here.

Most games require or deserve none of the above.

I ggclose in all chat only if there are 2 or less kills on either team. I like to rub those stomps in no matter which team wins. Otherwise I tend to just type ggwp into team chat or have a quick back and forth with the team over comms.

GG is rubbing it in, because it obviously wasn't a good game. o7 is Saluting and showing respect. Some of the new players also don't know what GG or o7 mean either. GG in a lot of games now mean Get Gud. its best to use the o7.

GG at the end of the match is to acknowledge that the other side fought their best, no running away or slagging in chat. Doesn't matter if you or they got beaten, even if by a fair margin, you're acknowledging their effort. Generally if it's 12-3 or less, I'll say "thanks for the game reds", but I'm not going to complain about a GG from the winners in earnest.

People who think you only say "good game" because it was an awesome close, edge of your seat, 1 in 100 game are idiots, it's about acknowledging the players on your team and the other, and trying to be a good a good sport.

"GG, Close" on a stomp, and various forms of slagging in a match are pretty cruddy behavior though, as are other forms of slagging during a match. Thankfully, pretty rare, but obviously there are a few edgelords above who think it's cool.

The only other thing I'll add is that "Stomp" is pretty much overused in this game. 12-4 is not a stomp. It's a snowball game, and when one side starts rolling at the start, it's going to be a big difference at the end, but what you often find is that in a 12-4 game, there's usually a bunch of very damaged mechs on the winning team, and just a little extra damage to the right components in the early/mid game evening up the firepower difference might have made the score much more even by the end. 12-0 to 12-2, yeah, very one sided, 12-3 arguable, but 12-4 isn't a stomp, and often a hard fought game.

I played competitive chess for many years growing up, we shook hands at the start of a match and at the end of a match no matter what you thought of a player or how the match went. That habit just spilled over into gaming for me, so you can normally expect to see 'gg' regardless of the result. No offense intended to anyone.

I always thought 'gg close' was intended as an insult. I seem to recall something like that from Microsoft gaming zone or the ladder on Starcraft 1; nearly two decades before seeing it in MWO. Posted Image (should I feel old?)

Oh, and gg vs GG on my part is just because I was using voip and lost track of how many times I hit caps lock Posted Image

"gg" is just being a sport, whether you win or lose. It's all about respect.
