Still, looking forward to see the legacy maps back in rotation.

So now I'm confused how they are able to be brought back. Was the data found in an old computer hidden in a basement or was the previous statements misinformation?

only hpg and canyon get a significant part of the map used.

Easily the most strange reason of why I've ever read.
They got pulled because they've gotten replaced with "better" versions.
Forest colony is coming back, was replaced by a "better" one. Same for frozen city.
Terra therma was replaced, caustic as well.
River city expanded.
I've never read anywhere that data was "lost".
Would also make no sense if the cost of a map is 250k$ and you just throw the asset away when digital storage is so cheap.

Mookan is correct, I heard the podcast in which Russ stated the old maps were overwritten. Anyone who works in IT knows full well you back up everything so I found this as a lame excuse. The original reason the maps were taken out of the game as stated was the map designer back then disliked the look of those maps and felt they did not meet his standards.

Lackluster but new nonetheless
No it's not.
The original had both a summer and winter version.
The upcoming winter canyon network will be new. Well, new in the sense that we have never had a snow version of that map, not that the map itself is new.

Pretty sure I played on them 12v12 and it was fine.
Because they are not as wide there is not a central spot to nascar around.
The biggest concern would more likely be taking hits as soon as you spawn as the drop points are not that far apart.

I don't recall it being that different. Just smaller so it didn't have some of those outlying areas?
The old Terra Therma I hope they bring back. While that volcano and platform area is still on the new map, no one goes there. Gives us a different set of terrain features to fight on and around.

That whole section is still there but very rarely utilized which makes me wonder if it would be worth the dev team looking into a way to adjust drop zones and out of bounds areas to use each map in different ways.
Frozen city is a good example of this.
The original map was roughly from D2 to H5. If the out of bounds area and the drop zones were adjusted we would have that same play area without needing an additional map and you would think that having that sort of control of the maps would then allow a number of variations on the play area.

No it isn't?
Its "newer" then old forest colony, but it is a classic map.
You mean frozen canyon network maybe?
As that is one is "new" but lackluster?

Considering how small a map is in size (as in MByte) and how cheap digital storage is it's the lamest excuse ever.
Like you have any company doing some kind of digital work without making regular backups.
I thought I followed podcasts kinda thoroughly, still must've missed that one somehow.

Nostalgia
The whole game is build and founded on it.
Old caustic is the map I first dropped on in MWO.
Don't know why, I miss the old one.
Now of course it plays the same, but so does basically every map, run to center and have a fight around a circle area doing a NASCAR.

They found them on a lost Star League data core in the periphery.
