Ever since Russ introduced 3rd person view with the explanation that his 6 year old kid didn't grasp the torso twist unless he could see it in 3rd person view, I have wanted to test it myself.

And yesterday I did.

My oldest son is now 5 years and some months and I was playing my yearly game (don't have time for much more with two kids) and my son saw it and wanted to try it.

So I let him, heck, I even created an account for him.

And with less than a minute of explaining the torso twist, he grasped the concept and was steering his mech around corners in a city map like a mini-pro gamer.

Wow that's some dedication to calling BS.

How did the conversation go with the wife?

Torso twisting is an easy concept to understand. That was never the problem. Being able to multitask twisting along with several other mechanics was difficult and was the problem. I grew up playing MechWarrior 2/3/4. It took several years with the franchise and a couple of MechWarrior 4 playthroughs before I was comfortable with twisting.

At first I hated twisting, I wasn't just struggling with the mechanic, I was severely bothered by my torsos and legs not aligning and I would just unbind twisting. The first time I played MechWarrior 4 I struggled in the tutorial, you had to circle a pole while looking at it and it took several minutes to do it once. I don't know exactly when or how I got comfortable with the mechanic, I think it was just a gradual evolution, it was some time before I started playing MWO.

Not every kid is the same. Just because your kid got it right away doesn't mean every other kid does or, indeed, perhaps other older individuals who don't have a great sense of spatial awareness. Peoples' brains are better at different things. Third person view doesn't really detract anything from the game.

My son is 8 and he understands torso twisting. He's probably been playing MWO since he was 6.

That said, he loves 3rd person. I see him in 3rd person a lot. He likes to see how his mech looks.

When he's not in 3rd person, if we're fighting, he'll say 'wait, I can't see my white arrow' which means he's not sure where he's pointing and wants me to wait until he gets reoriented.

Heat management isn't something he does well at either.

He really enjoys the game and all of the different mechs.

I never did any torso twisting before this game. I also couldn't move and shoot well. I actually wanted to boot up MW3 in 2013 and try out my new skills in the campaign but the game wouldn't run right even on my old Windows XP system. I obviously was a terrible pilot as a kid.

I think playing Mechwarrior in 3rd person would be fun but the game kind of has to be designed to work in 3rd person, just be designed to be 1st person then 3rd person added in later. I would envision it something like WoT only with mechs.

What mechs does he like? You do privet lobbies or let him off into solo yolo land?

I know this is probably gonna be an unpopular opinion, but I'll be honest, I enjoy the third person but wish the arms weren't locked in it. It makes for fun videos and challenges.
Spoiler

Anyway while I could see the excuse of doing it to make it easier, you often can't even see the legs in most of the views since they are so far up in the sky. And being high in the sky was the issue people had most with it (see over ridges without getting over them). The arrow simply does the job better. But I enjoy the novelty. It also opens up a very simple pinpoint solution that's also in Warthunder, the way you move (from terrain/etc) affects your shots. Watch the tags and laser streams in first and third with multiple mechs. Or if you only need one example.

Shorthand: The way your mech moves in the game should affect your aim, rather than come from the stationary magical glide camera we have. It's the very reason Rhialto's complaint of broken shadows even exists, the view from the camera is perfectly stationary and as such anything attached to it is also stationary. The mech bob is also artificial in that it doesn't match what the mech is actually doing, you can see in your shadows at times your cockpit is going up as your mech is going down.

I can't for the life of me understand why any child would have any issue understanding the concept of torso-twisting, if said child is also intelligent enough to be playing an MMO. I also don't understand why anything in a game made for older people is geared towards helping Russ's kid understand exceedingly basic concepts. (I may have theories, but I'll keep them to myself to avoid the ban hammer.)

That said, I also don't understand why this warranted it's own thread, or why I bothered to take the time to add a response to it...must be the alcohol.

Well if you think that well over 50% of the playerbase does NOT torso twist at all.

I think you now see where this is all heading.

It just highlights to me just how bad people are.

That was the lamest of lame excuses in PGI History if you actually believe that post, you are very gullible.

Read it for yourself.

I want to play 3rd person, but without the map (is there a way to turn it on in 3rd person?) it's a no for me.
