I currently have the Cipher (unskilled), Bludgeon (pulse vomit), Hellbringer (2 HLL + 4 ERML + ECM) (skilled) and Revenant (quad LRM 15, 3 ERML + Tag) (skilled).

I can get a free mech from the current event and I have my eye on the Highlander IIC to go for some sort of a mixed build (dual UAC10, ATMs or LRMs and lasers with a tag) or Orion IIC (for pure brawling power with LBX20, 4 SRM6, lasers, AMS and running at over 75kph) but it's a very close-ranged mech. I assum I can tweak the loadout to make it work at ranges of around 400-500m. How would that be?

I would certainly like another mech, maybe with ECM and be able to sustain long fights. Please suggest some names and possibly the loadout as well, even for the above mentioned mechs.

You don't have much darka. Grab Night Gyr, the H has ecm. But its not out for c-bills yet. Dont really do Clan, not the best guy to get advice from.

from the free clan mechs offered this event I would go for:

hunch2c, nova, hellbringer

orion2c and kodiak are also good but are much more specialized for certain maps/modes

highlander is a bad mech

Eeeh the Orion is a monster up close sure, and with the new old maps dropping like the stinking turds they are, that does increase the number of brawler friendly maps. Buut brawling is one of those things where you could just as well lose 5 games in a row through simply not being in range in time, or from being forced to hold back for too long. The Kodiak is on the other end of the scale - its terrible torso yaw coupled with deathly slow acceleration mean opponents can literally side step you, and then you will need to turn the 'Mech to catch up... And you won't. UAC40 or laser vomit Hunchie (not sure which is up for grabs) would be my bet.

The Orion IIC probably fills a good niche in your line-up, so that's certainly a solid choice.

The Nova offers a few things - your first Medium, a PPC poptart, a 3 AMS option and crazy laser vomit.

The Kodiak, although not what it used to be, is a solid choice if you want a dakka Assault.

Orion IIC is the only heavy mech in the game that can field LRM80 and still have decent ammo count and speed. Only problem is that most of it's weapons are on the left side, so if you lose that, you're stuck with a laser or two..

But still, one of my favorite LRM boats..

Is it the speed and size that makes it a bad mech? It looks like it can run a variety of builds for mid-range game.

I tested the Kodiak in testing grounds. The turn rate is worse than the Mauler, it feels like and to me the Mauler that I got for free for the X'mas event is the most expensive free mech. I have spent so much C-bills trying different things and skills but it still feels so bad 'cause of the movement. So, I'm going to pass on the Kodiak, despite the amount of firepower it can have.

Yeah, it's the Champion Hunchback IIC which has dual UAC10s and some ERML as stock loadout and runs at 64kph or something. It looks really weak. Not sure how agile it is though as I haven't tested it.

I was looking at mechs that could do well at 300-500m range while still being to NASCAR and take out targets up close. I'm currently using the Hellbringer and it's dual HLL + 4ERML loadout is helping a lot. Plus, its 81kph speed helps me relocate and find new vantage points quickly and keep firing. I might not get a lot of kills but the damage is decent and the firepower helps in opening up components quickly. So, I was looking at something with a similar taste. Not necessarily lasers only but something that is mobile enough to help me change location and keep firing at enemies from 300-500m away and also brawl a bit when needed.

For Clan mechs you don't have, I'd recommend:

Mad Cat MkII-B 2 UAC 10 2 UAC5 JJs
Blood Asp-A or B 1 UAC 10 3 UAC5 ECM JJs

Ebon Jaguar - Too many good builds to list
Linebacker- Build it like a Hellbringer with speed instead of ECM
Night Gyr (probably the D)- Dakka or Gauss + ER MLs whatever you prefer.

Vapor Eagle (when it's out for C-bills)
Huntsman- SRMs + ER SLs maybe?
Nova, lots of good builds but the SPL Er Micro works well, the Nova-S(C) is a good 3xAMS mech
Stormcrow, lots of builds, all MPLs is kind of fun

Piranha 1, 2 and 3...1 and 2 for sure.
Arctic Cheetah

I'd check GrimMechs for build ideas. That's usually where I go first.

I agree with Orville's recommendation. Personally, I believe these are your first 4 mechs you need for faction Clan play:
1. MadCat B or DS
2. LBK
3. Storm Crow
4 ACH - It's tougher and more forgiving than a PIR. Many consider it to be the best light in the game.

After you have these my secondary requirements are:
1. HBR - Learn ranged laser vomit
2. EBJ -Learn even better ranged laser vomits
3. Nova - Double AMS 6SPL 6MicL will poptart and cut legs offs
4. WHK- 4PPC Prime is the best sniper mech in the game.
5. Night Gyr - 5AC2 1UAC2 is a good contender for 2nd best sniper mech in the game.

AND remember, having mechs is nice, having fully skilled mechs is something you should do before even considering faction play. Good Luck!

Hmmm.... looks like, except for the Hellbringer, none of the mechs offered in this event are good. Maybe the Orion IIC but definitely not the Highlander, going by what's said earlier. So, I guess I'll pick the Orion IIC, though I'll be fondly looking at the Highlander.

The highlander has really bad mounts and weird hardpoint types. If you want you can still try it, but imo it's probably the worst clan assault, it just doesnt do anything really well

If you like the orion get it, it's a fairly fast tanky mech, but the best loadout for it is lbx/srms which is 300m or less

But to do what you want hellbringer is still the best option out of mechs offered, its not the worst idea to have multiples of the same mech with different loadouts. For 300-500m nascaring you could do 2LPL+4-5ERML, or load it up with MPLs (I think u can do 8)

2 UAC10s and 2 ER PPCs on the IIC-C is great build and has a lot of hitpoints, I wouldn't knock that one at all.

the onion, anytime. @free mech.

wonderful brawler, excellent in fw and s7, and on the right map with the right people a blast in gp. still okay to great in qp, depending on the support you get from your "team".

I think so. I can't think of anything it can do that something else doesn't do much better. The dakka/energy builds posted above are all better on MK2s (not that they're particularly good combos to begin with, imo)

Huntsman, Stormcrow and Nova are probably the only mediums you'll ever need. Ebon Jaaaaaaaag and Hellbringer are the only heavies you'll ever need period. Kodiak, Marauder and Mad Cat are the only assaults you'll ever need. Throw in there the Dire Whale and the Supernova A for the cheese and you're all set. The Piranha is the best light mech in the game as of now so, there you have it. I've played clans for ages now, because IS mechs look ugly and the only ones I own are the ones that I got from packs, the Marauder and the Warhammer because they're the only ones that are pretty and the Annihilator for that HGs+Lasers overpowered meta cheese.
