Am I missing something here? Single heat sinks have .75 cap vs .50 cap of doubles.

But SHS have lower heat dissipation. This is a way to make SHS viable in builds where you have tonnage but wouldn't necessarily have enough slots to add a lot of DHS.

But the dissipation isn't even doubled like the name would suggest. Is this strictly a balancing issue, because if I remember my tabletop rules correctly double heatsinks were literally double cap and dissipation.

It's an attempt to balance them, not ver successful as dhs are still so much better.

It's multiplayer video game balance taking advantage of the fact that nothing else in Battletech physics makes sense either to make SHS have some redeeming value on builds that have to use them, like IS lights that need the slots since they have small engines.

Because... PGI
Same reason as why firing 2 Large Lasers in your left arm at the same time as 2LL in your right arm makes your mech's systems think you have fired 5+ LLs, and you have actually broken all the known laws of thermodynamics and created extra heat energy out of nothing - or why a missile fired out of a SRM2 launcher has more hp than the exact same missile fired out of a SRM6 launcher - or why a mech running at 150kph can have a leg blown off and not cartwheel itself into oblivion.
Don't expect anything to make sense when PGI is involved!

Yeah like on the SNV if you throw 2 HLL and 6 ERML on there you can bring. Over 40 SHS, it's actually pretty nice, heat wise.

SHS has an advantage in regards to "crit padding"... If you have the tonnage to use them. Losing a single is better than loosing a double, or a weapon to a crit.

there are still a handful of situations where shs are userful. of course out of 250 mechs i think only 5 carry singles.
i did find that they work better on rac builds, all that extra heat capacity lets you run your guns into jam without shutting down. but im really no fan of racs. not to mention one of my long standing pet peeves with game developers is not understanding how gatling guns actually work. though to be fair the gau-8 is kind of op.

I saw a video from several years ago featuring a Banshee with dozens of SHS. So I tried it out and it's not terrible.
